Taking a free Snapshot
13. Oct, 2008 by Adii Rockstar in New Themes
Just to prove that we’re not too busy with design contests and upcoming themes, to still care about the community: we’d like to announce the release of our very first free theme – Snapshot.
Snapshot is based on our very own WooThemes Showcase and we’ve simply removed all of the “Woo-specific” code from the template, whilst porting the original showcase theme to the established basis & framework we build all our other themes with. The theme is aimed at users who’d either like to display a very visual portfolio, a photoblog of sorts or a design gallery (much like BestWebGallery).
Even though this is a very niche-focused theme, we expect that many of you will enjoy a bit of the Woo-quality that we’ve become renowned for during the last couple of months.
Trying something new…
Along with the release of our first free theme, we’ve also decided that we’d like to try something new and open up our community to more prospective WooThemes users. So since this is a free release, we can’t include free technical support; but with our new 1 Year WooThemes Support Access package, you can now join in the fun and get the help you need.
Basically for a fee of $40 per annum, you’ll get access to all of our support resources and WooThemes community vibes for our free themes. We don’t think that’s a bad deal… Do you?
So what’s left to say? Preview the theme in action, download it and consider signing up for our 1 Year WooThemes Support Access package. Oh and please let us know how much you love us!

Hmmm, seems I have seen this somewhere … oh yeah, you’re just copying Brian Gardner. At least try to be original!
13 October 2008 at 1:12 pm #
Steve. You’re a total putz. I think you should be charged for the theme just out of putzy principle.
13 October 2008 at 1:14 pm #
Haha @ Steve. Nice one. Not sure what you mean though… The theme seems pretty unique to me, except of course for the fact that it is featured on our own Showcase.
At least next time, try not to be snotty and leave a constructive comment even when you want to criticize someone / -thing.
13 October 2008 at 1:50 pm #
thanks! love how you mix a “free” one in here with all your great premiums.
13 October 2008 at 5:37 pm #
Looks great, I’m sure lots of people will find some use in this one… there’s far too few of these image-centric Wordpress themes out there; I’m already eager to find a project that’ll give me an excuse to skin it. Thanks!
And @ Steve – huh? I checked Brian Gardner’s Wordpress templates out, and while they’re very nice (I’ve used Revolution quite a bit in the past), none of them are even remotely close to this one.
13 October 2008 at 5:44 pm #
I think he means the free release being a copy cat of Gardner’s news…. but again, I think the Woo Masters should charge the ol’ boy.
13 October 2008 at 7:29 pm #
Almost exactly what I was looking for as a portfolio site. Thanks
14 October 2008 at 2:11 am #
Steve is talking about Brian making Revolution open source under the The GNU General Public License, and then charging a fee for technical support. This is indeed a very similar instance, but hardly worth the negative comment.
14 October 2008 at 2:30 am #
@Nick – I knew that…
And yes it wasn’t worth the negative comment, since this approach is hardly unique and thus can’t be “copied” as such.
14 October 2008 at 2:33 am #
@Nick – I agree, it isn’t worth a negative comment
14 October 2008 at 2:34 am #
I’m looking forward to hearing @Steve’s negative comment on Revolution site when they start with recurring subscription service, claiming that Brian copied us on that
14 October 2008 at 3:59 am #
Thank You Woo!!!
i m glad to use that!
14 October 2008 at 4:41 am #
I just wanted to say thanks for sharing abel. I’m loving it, really good work you’ve done here.
14 October 2008 at 7:08 am #
Yes, I do mean the Support Package, not the theme. The fact that you think my comment is snotty is funny. I’m challenging you to come up with something unique with your services instead of doing what others are already doing.
14 October 2008 at 7:35 am #
@Steve – Why would we want to come up with something else, when we have had this idea since the start of WooThemes? What is wrong with conducting business like others? Why are you claiming that we are copying Brian when you don’t know the full story or what happens behind the scenes?
I think you should show some more respect in your comments. It will get you a lot further.
14 October 2008 at 8:32 am #
Hey Steve,
When running an online business it is impossible to come across as unique in everything you do, seeing there is always so much competition offering what you are, especially in the Wordpress theme market.
A support package is what we have had in mind for sometime now, believe it or not, seeing it has always been our intention to offer some free themes, and we need a way to support them. A support package makes perfect sense.
With regard to us not offering unique services I’d have to disagree. We are the only Wordpress theme site collaborating with top-notch designers on new, innovative themes, and we have some very exciting designers lined up for the next few months. Getting industry-leading designers to design generic wordpress templates for you to purchase at a tiny price costs us considerable money.
We are also pretty unique in offering a contest whereby you can promote your wordpress designs, even if you do not have html/css/wordpress skills, and stand the chance to win decent money.
Lastly do we need to mention our membership system whereby you get access to all our themes at a small monthly cost? We were the first serious start up to offer this.
Hopefully these are points to consider.
And don’t worry there are lots of unique plans in the pipeline

Yikes – you do something great and someone wants to spoil it! How about celebrating success!

14 October 2008 at 2:14 pm #
@River Girl – Yeah, unfortunately some people always have to be negative and can’t share in the fun that’s going around!
14 October 2008 at 11:21 pm #
Seems like this free theme becoming a mes sfor you guys. certainly seems like a war going on between woothemes and revolution.
WooWarriors Vs. RevolutionsKings lol:p
15 October 2008 at 12:19 am #
Recardo – That is not true. We don’t have beef with anyone and have a lot of respect for what Brian has achieved with Revolution. Everything is not about competition (and subsequently – winning) – and the industry we’re in, is definitely big enough for everyone involved.
15 October 2008 at 7:14 am #
^ I agree with Adii – truth be told, all of the guys in the premium theme (and now open source) market aren’t as much of competitors as the general public thinks. I can’t speak for Adii and Woo, but what I can say is that a lot of my clients are developers who see the value in all of our themes for their business. What this means is that a fair % of my clients probably purchase the Woo membership, the iThemes pack, and so on as well. Our existence isn’t competition with one another, rather a way for developers to offer a wide variety of quality designs to their clients.
15 October 2008 at 7:34 am #
Well said Brian. The market is far to big for any one company / developer to try and take the whole pie anyway…
15 October 2008 at 8:19 am #
Agreed with you guys. The whole market is so big, that even i wanna dive into it, probably soon i will. wish you both guys luck for great success in future. Rock on mates\,,/
16 October 2008 at 4:30 am #
It does not run. There is no background and graphics.
16 October 2008 at 4:35 am #
@Roman – What do you mean? The demo looks just fine?
21 October 2008 at 8:00 pm #
Indeed, as to copying the idea if at all it ever happened, why not. Why reinvent the wheel ? Why do we all drive a car rather then trying to invent something of our own.
Anyways, nice stuff. I just made my first site here, http://www.cat-showcase.com !! Everything worked like a Charm. Thanks Woo.
22 October 2008 at 1:08 am #
@Karan – Thanks for the backup!
And glad that you found the theme easy to use!
24 October 2008 at 5:46 am #
Yeah think I know what Roman meant. When you first install theme there are no bg images (everything is white and blank, just RSS icon) and you have to go to theme settings and choose some different style, then they show. After that when you choose default.css back again you get that colored default settings. Probably small glitch or it is intended to be like that, dunno.
Anyway this is something that I looked for a long time, even tried some other scripts
but wp rocks. It will become great for my css nationalized gallery after some design adjustments but backbone is great. Thank you guys!

This is going to sound really dumb.. but when I write a post, how do I upload an image in the additional fields? There’s no upload button anywhere.
27 October 2008 at 2:47 am #
Scott – We are not offering free support for this theme. But I can tell you that you need to upload the image via WP’s “Add Media” button. You should also re-read the theme documentation, which gives you a How-To in this regard.
27 October 2008 at 1:15 pm #
Oh.. I see.. so you actually upload it using upload media button and then copy and paste the link into the box… hmm.. okay… I think I’ll just build my own upload function instead for it.
BTW, you could make it easy by using a dynamic image resizing script. There’s so many out there. No need to create thumbnails or mess with anything. Just point to original photo in IMG SRC and the script takes care of the rest.

Is there anything different about uploading images through the media button – in Wordpress 2.7? Was using this theme successfully using WP 2.6.
Thanks. Great theme!
CM
6 January 2009 at 12:07 am #
@Craig – Nope, nothing has changed and the theme should still be working fine in WP 2.7.
13 January 2009 at 6:19 pm #
I just tried using this on WP2.7 (for the first time) and I can get my image to show but not the post text. I know we’re not supposed to get support but I wanted to see if anyone else is having issues on WP2.7? I havent used this on prior releases so I cant compare. Thanks so much for this theme- wish I could use it!
28 January 2009 at 6:40 pm #
I appreciate that the theme comes with no support however there’s no documentation either. Adii referred to the “theme documentation” on Oct/27 however the only documentation in the latest download is a change log.
Is it missing from the v1.1 (Jan/16/09) release?
If other people are having problems I found that I had to manually create a “cache” folder in the /wp-content/themes/snapshot for the thumbnailing to work (I’m using WP2.7). Still trying to work out the rest though!
29 January 2009 at 12:46 am #
@Jono – Yes, the theme documentation was available to the public before, but we have decided to only make that available to WooThemes members for now.

Ага, на самом деле все очень просто
