In perfect geometry
09. Jan, 2009 by Adii Rockstar in New Themes
It feels weird to be writing a blog post about a new theme release on WooThemes, when it’s my own theme – since I was only blogging about other designers’ themes on Woo for the last couple of months. The last time I blogged about my own theme release on Woo, was way back in July 2008 when we launched WooThemes and I released VibrantCMS. And yes – I concur – that’s waaay too long to wait to release a new theme… But onto this theme now…
Geometric is a blog + portfolio hybrid that enables you to showcase both your written and visual content within one template and one WordPress installation. I spent a lot of time to make sure that there was a seamless integration between the two different types of content on the site, which wasn’t really the case with our previous portfolio themes. For example, on a date-based archive page or search results page, the template automatically picks up what type of content it should display (written vs visual) and then makes it look easy and stylish at the same time.
The design itself is slightly more minimalistic and is defintely heavily inspired by my recent fascination with shapes and how they interact with each other (thus the name: geometric). You can also see a similar line of thinking when you visit my own blog.
The feature that I am however most excited about is the completely customized homepage of Geometric. If you’re used to widgetized sidebars or widgetized spaces in sections of the theme (we’ve implemented both these in previous themes) – you can prepare to be amazed, because your whole homepage on Geometric is widgetized! So basically we’ve developed a bunch of custom widgets (12 in total!), which you can move around on the homepage (and in the sidebar) – so you have total control over how you utilize Geometric to best serve your needs & ideas.
I trust that you will find value in these release, since I really enjoyed developing it. Also – this is my first release in a very long time – so go easy on me…
But right now, you should head on over to the demo and have a play around the theme. After that, I’d really appreciate some compliments or just general feedback ya’know…
Notice: Geometric has already been upgraded to version 1.1.0 to accomodate 5 more colour schemes and an option to switch between a left- & right-hand sidebar [12-01-2009].

I don’t like the colours of the default one. But creme-red looks just fantastic.
9 January 2009 at 2:21 am #
I agree, creme-red is very nice but I’m not a fan of other styles.
I believe that this theme has a potential to become very popular, you just need to develop some other color schemes (possibility light colors, it doesn’t look so good with dark colors).
Anyway, very glad I went with a subscription.

@Fink About it – Don’t you like the colours or is it more a case of the light-on-dark design? What do think of the other dark colour schemes?
9 January 2009 at 3:32 am #
Here’s my review of the other styles to summarize my feelings:
Default: The combination orange-blue is just something that I don’t like. That’s all a personal preference.
Charcoal-yellow: The yellow headers don’t fit in. Replace them with a darker green or a some dark blue.
Brown-red: It is fine, except for the red links – they are too dark.
Orange-Babyblue: Very playful and colourful. However, it could be more perfect when using something like Comic Sans MS. (Try that out, if you like)
9 January 2009 at 3:34 am #
@Fink About It – LOL! Dunno if that Comic Sans comment is serious, but I seriously hope not…
9 January 2009 at 3:49 am #
Wow… Comic Sans. Is that a real word?
9 January 2009 at 3:50 am #
@Adii – You bet, I am serious. Just try for me, okay? If we both go blind, I’ll take it all back…
9 January 2009 at 3:52 am #
@David Perel – No, that’s a real font

Great design. Widgetizing the homepage is a very clever idea. I agree that lighter color schemes would be nice.

Excellent theme. I was so close to winning one on Twitter.

Great – Woo still ahead of the game!
The Page Nav is at the bottom of the page right? Is there a widget that would put this somewhere else?

What happened to this look and feel? Are there plans to release it?

Love the design Adii – well done on another great release!

I think general consensus has been reached re: the colour schemes… Mark & I are working on this over the weekend and more colour schemes will be added. We’ll also be adding an option to move the sidebar from left -> right and vice versa. So Geometric will receive an upgrade very shortly after its release.
@Keith – It can’t be turned off and it can also be used in the sidebar. There’s also an option to use pages in the main navigation in the header, instead of categories.

Those are some of the alternative styles that we’ll be adding. I decided to push through on the development and get the release out there sooner, rather than later. So there’s still a few things that’ll be added to the theme in the next couple of days!
Agile development ftw…

I think widgetizing a page is a great idea, I love what you’ve done. You can move all of it and not just a couple of parts. It makes the UI a alot more user friendly. I think that will become really useful to people in the near future – people that have little programming experience or people that want to cut down on the coding.

Woo! I was waiting for this one
!
I plan to use it as a framework for my upcoming personal blog!

This is an absolutely wonderful theme adii, and a totally new direction for woothemes.
Style aside the functionality along is amazing, if the framework behind it is even half as good as your other themes, then this would be a great theme for a developer to edit to suit a client who want total control over content all the time!
I might even have to purchase it to take it apart and see what makes it tick.
Although some of the colors are iffy on the styles, I still think the otherall look is amazing. Sort of similar to your new blog design if I do say so myself.

Wow. A really interestering and valuable theme -great stuff.
As a developer/designer hobbyist this is the first theme since Overeasy, and Freshnews before that (which is in use on my current film blog), that I’ve been tempted to buy.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the colour schemes, (although I can see why people have an issue in some cases!) as they can be changed quite easily of course. If its easy enough to intergrate then you’re saving us a chunk of time hacking it later.
I actually really like the creme-red as a starting point – i’d maybe change the BG to the lovely #E7E7E7 or something similar to what Magnus and the default Overeasy has, and play about with the accent colours for the section headers – a nice green, dark grey – even black would look pretty cool.
If you can get the option for having the sidebar on the right going then that’d be swell. It’d save me having to hack it up later!
Does the theme have a video widget? It’d be great if you could intergrate that too – maybe one that’s 1/3 for *wee* videos and a bigger 2/3 one that acts as a featured film – i’d certainly make use of that kind of feature.
Will wait for the next update before purchasing, but i’m defo keeping my eye on it…. nice one Adii!

I started playing with this theme and found it really frustrating to try to figure out… I followed the setup docs but no matter what I do I still cant mimic what the demo has. I find this to be the same problem on all the themes.
Would it be possible to maybe have a “how to” tutorial on how to setup the theme the way it is demo-ed on the site on ALL the themes?
11 January 2009 at 1:48 am #
@Steve – Geometric will be updated to V1.1 tomorrow. Dunno about the video widget right now, but I’ll consider it…
@Viviana – What exactly are you struggling with? Along with the V1.1 update tomorrow, I’m also updating the theme documentation to include a little video tutorial on setting up the custom homepage. If you let me know what else you are struggling with, I can focus on those as well.

Hi Adii, thanks for the response. I am having a hard time getting the overall setup working. since its a long list of things, I will post it in the forums under geometric.

Great visually appealing theme. Nice work.
11 January 2009 at 5:18 pm #
This is the best personal portfolio theme I’ve seen yet. I have not purchased due to the color in the demo. I understand that there are more color options and that would be nice to see before I buy.
As an illustrator, I’m looking for a neutral color scheme that lets my artwork to pop. Put together a white, gray and black or black, gray and white theme with stunning images and you will have something.
Can the blog be removed from the home page and segregated onto it’s own page like you did in Over Easy and VibrantCMS themes?
Nice work.

HI Addi, I love the theme and i already got one as a bonus. But i dont really like the color scheme. You goota use some light colorcombos…
And BTW… i have an suggestion or should i say a request, There is a shortage of wordpres themes made for product review websites. I was wondering if you could release one in near future…
12 January 2009 at 4:15 am #
Hi I’m thinking to make a similar site, like this: vouchermate.co.nz
I’m just wondering what theme will you suggest me to use to make it as close as possible?
Thanks.

Yummy. Off-white & green
Yummy. Monochrome
Video widget!
!

The monochrome version of this theme rules! Nice to see a bit of different kind of approach to the Woothemes theme design. Keep up the top-notch work!
16 January 2009 at 11:10 am #
Can the blog be set to a page of it’s own leaving the portfolio on the home page?
Is there any way to preview the color schemes before I buy?
22 January 2009 at 4:17 am #
Love the monochrome color scheme. Nice portfolio theme.
Can the “Designed by WooThemes” at the top of the page be moved or removed?
30 January 2009 at 6:43 am #
nice theme, I will download it
24 February 2009 at 2:22 am #
I love this theme, and was thinking of buying it, but like most of the other comments, the colour schemes are the problem. I don’t really like any of them – unlike most on here, I prefer dark layouts.

Wow. This one blows a lot of the competition away. Congrats on another Woo theme that’s been added to bestwpthemes.com, our list of the best themes on the web.
