Post Images gets an overhaul

by Adii Rockstar in Development

A lot of new things happening over here at WooThemes HQ… Along with the pending redesign of our back- and front end, we’ve also been working on a new themes framework, which will most definitely enhance your experience when using our themes.

So what’s this “themes framework” thing?

Basically we’ve just developed a new core theme, which will now be used throughout all of our themes. This core includes the most important features / functions that are currently used throughout most of our themes.

So in terms of our users, nothing much changes, but we have now enabled ourselves to update our themes more regularly (and easily), along with the fact that every theme will be much more standardized in terms of the way it is coded.

The new framework / backend is currently only available in Aperture, Metamorphosis and myweblog, but as soon as we’ve squashed the last bugs, it’ll be integrated into all of our older themes.

Uploading Post Images & The “auto image” option

If you haven’t seen the preview of the new backend in action, I suggest you view this video first.

There are basically two new features we’re using for post images (thumbnails or featured images):

  1. Upload an image directly to a custom field i.e. you don’t need to upload, then copy / paste the image URL anymore.
  2. The “auto image” option automatically pulls the first image within a post (to display it as the post thumbnail or featured image) if there’s no custom image specified.

But why believe me? Here’s a little video to show you what we’re doing:

* The little intro snippet was created by our good friend, Richard Bolland.

This feature is fantastic. When working with Aperture(my new heart throb), it saves a great deal of time when loading the site. Thank you!

Amazing how simple, and sort of obvious that feature is. It makes so much sense to do that, but I’ve certainly never thought of doing it before. So well done WooThemes. Brilliant touch.

The Woo Auto Img rocks. I really think that it makes life easy.

If anyone was wondering, you can just promote the image order to “1″ if you want to use an older uploaded image as the Auto Image. :)

@liam – It may be a small addition, but we agree that it definitely makes the experience with our themes so much cooler! :) And whilst we weren’t the first guys to do this (Jason Schuller released some plugins to do this a few weeks ago), we still had to add this to our themes ASAP.

This is great. I hope the update will be easy, since I tweaked my theme quite a bit.

I don’t regret at all that I choosed WooThemes. You guys are professionals!

    Cheers.

    @ Adii

Will this update be retroactive? Will it be applied to the older themes (Busy Bee, Fresh Folio, etc.)? Is so, does that mean we need to download them again?

I’d like to know this as well. These are all great new features but are they going to be implemented in any of the old themes as well?

tried to use the free metamorphosis theme. Great theme but unfortunately I have problems with the thumbnail-function. Thumbnails in posts don’t show up and uploading an image with the new upload function gives me errors (…Warning: readdir(): supplied argument is not a valid Directory resource in /www/htdocs/tutsch/blog/wp-content/themes/metamorphosis/functions/admin-custom.php on line 143 ; Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /www/htdocs/tutsch/blog/wp-content/themes/metamorphosis/functions/admin-custom.php:143) in /www/htdocs/tutsch/blog/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 850). Sorry for posting this here, but I tried to use this free theme and so I have no possibility to post in the forum.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks, Kurt

We’re launching WOO2 soon and once all possible bugs have been squashed related to WOO2, we’ll start implementing the WooFramework (and this functionality) with our older themes (starting with the most popular themes).
