Your Daily Edition Teaser
13. Aug, 2009 by Adii Rockstar in Theme Concepts
We’re an excitable bunch over here at the WooThemes HQ and nothing excites us more than working with great individuals and getting to share upcoming theme concepts with you lot!
This time around we’ve got a new design from now-WooThemes legend collaborator – Liam McKay – to show you…
We approached Liam in July and asked him to design a follow-up theme for the hugely popular Gazette Edition theme (which is also one of our all-time best-selling themes). The result is a superb, content-rich magazine- / news-style design titled The Daily Edition. Let’s have a look at the design…

The header showcasing a minimalist & sophisticated style, which just means that it's a blank canvas and ready for your modifications to be added. Just add creativity.

Simple featured scrolling module (for the homepage), which utilizes left / right navigation, as well as an indicator (the 5 red dots) of where you're at in the "slideshow".

We'll also (probably) use extensive jQuery (by the master - Foxinni) to make the video player module something special indeed.

Here's something we haven't implemented (at least in this form before)... Talking points is a mash-up of most-commented & manually highlighted articles. We obviously just love the Basecamp-esque styling of this module! This styling is also carried through & supported in the design of the sidebar elements.

Lastly, the footer "ends" the design with the same minimalism & sophistication that the header started. The footer will be extended and extremely customizable; with the main aim being to improve navigation to the most important sections on your website.
Feedback / Suggestions
So what do you think about the images we pasted above? Think this is a worthy addition to our collection of Magazine-type themes? From the teaser images we’ve posted above, is there anything (in terms of functionality) that we should consider including at this stage? Any other suggestions?
Anyway… Whatever you decide to say, just fill up & enjoy on the comments below!

This theme looks sick! Sleek, clean and well designed. I am really looking forward to this one!
13 August 2009 at 12:48 pm #
Looks good so far! Looking forward to seeing the end result
13 August 2009 at 12:52 pm #
It looks great! I would love to see a highly customizable homepage with the use of some widgets. Maybe 3 / 4 columns.
13 August 2009 at 12:53 pm #
Looks amazing. Minimal enough to let your content speak, and surely customizable enough (Woo doesn’t do it any other way) to brand to your liking.
I’d buy it today if it was available… have something perfect in mind!
Especially like the styling of the proposed “Talking Points,” sidebar content. Honestly, wouldn’t change a thing thus far.
13 August 2009 at 1:23 pm #
I hope this blows your mind, but the “Talking Points” module is intended for the content part of the design; not the sidebar!
13 August 2009 at 2:25 pm #
That’s a neat feature, so it would be in the footer widgets?
14 August 2009 at 9:35 am #
I, too, noticed the “Talking Points” module. I really like the way that particular section is laid out. Simple in design yet it really stands out to me.
13 August 2009 at 12:54 pm #
It’s on my next purchase list
13 August 2009 at 1:04 pm #
Awesome. Perfect. Need I say more?
I’ve had calls from potential clients looking for more “minimalistic” designs, and even though this one is replete with sophistication, it looks like it’ll fit the bill.
Bring it on!
13 August 2009 at 1:24 pm #
One copy of Daily Edition coming up then. Mark has already started to do the coding, even though we’ll probably release other themes in our design bin before this one.
13 August 2009 at 1:12 pm #
fabulous!! love what I see so far!
13 August 2009 at 3:22 pm #
Looking very nice indeed. I like the Video PlayList area.
13 August 2009 at 4:13 pm #
The design looks great. I love the colors that he chose here. The commenting screen does look very clean and well laid out. Maybe a bit above Basecamp in my opinion!
13 August 2009 at 7:06 pm #
Wow, that looks like it has serious potential to become the best magazine WP theme ever.
14 August 2009 at 2:00 am #
Thanks for those extremely kind words!
And I don’t think we’d mind that The Daily Edition can be considered as the best ever Magazine theme…
13 August 2009 at 10:04 pm #
Just can’t wait to see the theme released!
14 August 2009 at 8:45 am #
Looks very nice cant wait to see the demo
14 August 2009 at 9:00 am #
The theme looks great. What I look for in a theme:
1. Pagination
2. Exclude/Include Categories & Pages from header/Footer
3. Auto Image Re-size
4. Content Tabs in the sidebar with tabs for Popular Posts, tags, comments
5. Easy Embeded AdSense
14 August 2009 at 9:22 am #
Then Daily Edition may just be the theme for you, since all of those features will be supported!
16 August 2009 at 4:36 pm #
To add it would be great to have a section on the home page for the editor to pick posts to display in a section other than the rotating banner & to choose posts from anywhere in the archive based on post ID.
I manage a magazine site where we have multiple authors & 2 editors. The editors have no easy way to populate their top picks from all the content. We had to hack something together with categories (not very elegant) – http://www.mywestworld.com
14 August 2009 at 10:19 am #
This looks so great. Can not wait.
14 August 2009 at 11:34 am #
Money in hand. Bring it!
14 August 2009 at 12:48 pm #
It’s always hard for me to picture the whole from the images of the parts … but it looks like a simple/classic type of design and I’m ready to see the whole thing! My only problem with it (as with all these new themes coming out) is that I start getting more ideas of things to do than I have time to complete!
14 August 2009 at 12:52 pm #
PS … When I am logged into your site now, it automatically fills in my name for a reply, but not my URL which I would normally want to add in case anyone wanted to contact me for further comment/discussion. This makes me want to log out to post a reply (like I did this time). Just a thought … maybe URL should be a field in account settings for replying?
14 August 2009 at 5:56 pm #
Mmm… We probably need to tweak something in the backend. Will check it out!
14 August 2009 at 6:07 pm #
Knew you would.
14 August 2009 at 1:11 pm #
This is perfect for something I have in mind. Any idea on release date?
Awesome job, thanks!
14 August 2009 at 5:55 pm #
Not yet… Based on the feedback we’ve gotten though, we may have to push this release a little earlier than previously anticipated.
14 August 2009 at 5:57 pm #
You execute awesome work, I gotta catch up!
14 August 2009 at 3:42 pm #
Well I have 2 concurrent thoughts:
1. YES! As much as I like (and use) Gazette, it looks like this addresses things on my wish list. It looks clean and classic. I think I’ll prefer the navigation on the slide show to the current slide show with the slide info. Are you able to place widgets in the footer? Additional Wish list: More ad spaces like Busy Bee, An automatic Twitter feed and icon, and an updated logo replacement method.
2. Da%%, wish I had waited a few weeks to buy. Ah, but can one have too many Woo themes? Too little time, too many blogs to start.
14 August 2009 at 5:52 pm #
I think all of those items on your wishlist will be covered in Daily Edition!
BTW – You should also check out Gazette v2.0, which also now includes some of that functionality.
15 August 2009 at 12:49 am #
Awesome. Looking forward to seeing it.
14 August 2009 at 3:45 pm #
Oh, more wish list: Ability to resize the slide show to be a true photo ratio.
15 August 2009 at 1:05 pm #
Looks sick!! I want it. Please push the release date up….Please!! haha. I am working on a project right now which I have been trying to decide what magazine style theme I am gonna use, this has my vote!
Hopefully we’ll see it soon. Although you can’t really tell in the pics, I too would be kind of interested to see how 2/3/4 columns would fit into this design.
Keep up the killer work!
16 August 2009 at 3:27 am #
Very well designed, Adii. Hope it is also well-coded
16 August 2009 at 3:39 am #
Hehe – I think the code in our other themes, speak for themselves. This will be one of our best themes to date I think!
16 August 2009 at 7:04 pm #
Gazette was the best mag theme ever to be released from an overall customization perspective.
I’m stoked to see a “new” version of it…
You have 3 or 4 coming soon that I’m looking forward to!
Cheers!
Jay
17 August 2009 at 2:39 am #
Oh my goodness, this is SUPER SLICK! Will -definitely- become a landmark WooThemes theme.
Now this is premium theme.
17 August 2009 at 9:46 am #
I’ve a project due very soon that looks like it’d fit perfectly with this style. Hope the release comes soon !
17 August 2009 at 11:03 am #
Wow…this looks amazing and like its filled with lot’s of great features! When is this going to be released. And if you aren’t going to be able to release soon….any chance that you could show more of the front page and interior page payout? That would help my client make a decision to wait on this one!
17 August 2009 at 1:20 pm #
Love it. I especially dig the pages/links below the header nav … much more prominent and visible there (vs. above header). Would love to see more screen shots, as well as anticipated release date (trying to decide if I should spend time tweaking my blog / gazette theme, or wait for this one).
18 August 2009 at 1:39 am #
No ETA for this one just yet. We have a bit of a congested release schedule in the next couple of months, but I mentioned it above: based on the feedback on this post, we’re definitely trying to squeeze Daily Edition for an earlier release than originally planned.
18 August 2009 at 3:26 pm #
Just saw a tweet that you’re thinking of revising the release schedule? Won’t commit until I see the whole design better, but I’m definitely intrigued. Plus, I’m just starting a new site using Gazette, so could probably transition to DE.
18 August 2009 at 3:33 pm #
Patience is not a vertue I possess. lol
19 August 2009 at 4:05 am #
Saw the same tweet — think an early release would be a great thing. Also, on a side note: I would bring out Sophisticatedfolio sooner rather than later. Best of luck with both!
19 August 2009 at 7:31 am #
I’m sure it’s hard to satisfy everyone and manage your release schedule…but with all the interest in this one…seems like an early release would result in immediate sales! Hope to buy this soon!
21 August 2009 at 6:51 pm #
I vote it becomes the next theme release. I wonder how many people feel the same.
22 August 2009 at 3:57 am #
From the comments it seems that a lot of people are begging for us to release this theme next… And we’re definitely re-jigging our schedule a bit to accommodate that, but it won’t be the next theme, since Antisocial (which people are begging for as well) will be next. But Daily Edition won’t be released in November, as originally planned…
21 August 2009 at 7:39 pm #
I was just about to buy Gazette, and now I’ve gotta hold off. Damn Adii. I agree with Brad Potter. I vote it become the next theme release. You can even take my money in advance.

Hehe – sorry for “complicating” things a bit!
Then again, it’s our job to release amazing new templates that make you drool. not?
8 September 2009 at 2:07 pm #
When is it coming???
8 September 2009 at 3:28 pm #
It’ll be available next week Tuesday!
8 September 2009 at 3:45 pm #
I Love It!! Looking forward to picking it up and all the different customizations coming our way. Thanks for pushing it out so quickly. Cheers!
9 September 2009 at 10:23 am #
Such elegant crafted design, soon-to-be legendary theme….born in WooThemesLand!
10 September 2009 at 7:33 am #
I don’t suppose we could see a screenshot of the whole homepage? I’m trying to decide if I should wait till tuesday to start a new project. Thanks as always!!!!
10 September 2009 at 8:00 am #
Why not just have a look at the beta preview online?
Here you go –> http://woothemes.com/demo/dailyedition/
10 September 2009 at 11:56 am #
Is it OK if we make some comments on the beta preview?
I like the clean look and colors, but those headers and slider text look huge. I guess we can customize.
10 September 2009 at 12:14 pm #
I think that big titles are in fashion right now in web design
Look at all of Envato’s blogs.
10 September 2009 at 12:29 pm #
Too funny, right under the email notification with your comment, there was an email from WebDesignDev. Titled
25 Websites That Use Huge Typography (although they mean really huge) http://www.webdesigndev.com
I can see it being appealing, I’ll probably change it though.
10 September 2009 at 12:42 pm #
Would be a shame for me to only nitpick on such a lovely design. So wanted to followup and say I love that green/black combo and I overall really like the clean elegance of it. Also full of nice touches.
10 September 2009 at 12:49 pm #
OK, back one more time. The headers are growing on me. They look more proportional on the single post pages.
Showing my print background. Don’t know how many times I’ve heard designers sneer if your header is too big! Becomes an automatic response.
10 September 2009 at 2:41 pm #
LOL @ the print comment.
11 September 2009 at 8:11 am #
Tuesday is a long time coming
1 October 2009 at 7:24 am #
