WooFunction: 178 Amazing Web Design Icons

25. Sep, 2009 by Adii Rockstar in Freebies

function_icons_releaseIn recent months we’ve worked quite hard to bring you some fantastic free stuff and we think that our growing collection of freebies is pretty awesome. So… Since icons are such a huge element in modern day web design, we decided to partner with one of the best icon designers we’ve come across to bring you a fantastic new web icon set.

We’ve worked with Liam McKay before on theme designs (5 to be exact) and we’ve always just admired his icon design work from afar. That however changes with the new WooFunction Web Icon Set which Liam recently completed for us.

The WooFunction Icon Set includes 178 amazing web-related icons in a sophisticated and glossy design style. All 178 icons are available as 32×32 pixel PNG files and we can assure you that they are indeed pixel-perfect. If you have an in-depth look at the individual icons, you’ll notice that Liam has spent a lot of time paying attention to the finer details, which means that this is a really classy icon set. Here; have a look for yourself:

All it needed / needs is a little minus sign to go with the plus and it would have been perfect. The x will do I suppose, but to me that doesn’t really signify remove / delete when on it’s own.

      25 September 2009 at 7:52 am #

I’m sure we can manage to chop and dice the + sign into a minus in photoshop, so we don’t have to bother Liam with it ;)

We need for our Project a eraser. Is it possible to add this to the collection?

        Thanks and hugs

One more thing: if you folks are interested in starting a Woo Academy project and feel like offering webinar series on how to create icons like these, for example, I’d definitely be excited about signing up for a reasonable fee.

It could be free for premium members like yours truly, of course.

I specialize in online training so do let me know if you need any consulting on how to set your program up.

Hehe… Yeah, I need to agree with Magnus. If we could produce such awesomeness as this, we’d probably be selling icons in addition to the themes. But unfortunately we can’t take any credit for the creation of this icon set.

Are we allowed to use theese in in themes? Or are we allowed to use them in commercial websites?

  15. Markku
    25 September 2009 at 12:25 pm #

Why on earth only 32×32px, I wouldn’t have minded 512×512px icons too. (Easy to make smaller if needed, 32×32px however look crappy if resized bigger, of course).

Otherwise, a very nice set of icons indeed.

    • Magnus Jepson
      25 September 2009 at 5:45 pm #

It’s actually not that easy to make large icons smaller, just by resizing them. They loose their edge so most icons are made and polished in all sizes. So if Liam made 64×64 and 128×128 he would have to repolish the 32×32 to make them look good e.g. it would take a lot more work.

I don’t think you’ll see many large icon design packs with bigger than 16px or 32px

      • liam
        25 September 2009 at 9:30 pm #

Yeah Magnus is right, It’s not simply a case of re-sizing you need to re-touch and in some cases re-make the smaller you go.

The set is available at one size only (as most free Icon sets) are. I’d recommend not re-sizing at all. It’s best to keep them at original size for that pixel perfect finish.

    Hi,
Can I use them in themes for WordPress?? I guess not? As WordPress themes have to be GPL.
I hope you release some icon sets that are compatible with GPL license, so that they’re worth using.

    • Adii Rockstar
      26 September 2009 at 4:37 am #

You can still use the icons in GPL’ed themes; just give credit. :)

      • Amit
        26 September 2009 at 6:40 am #

        Hi Adii,
To be GPL compatible, the theme cannot ‘force’ a backlink. It can only force a ‘credit’ link somewhere, anywhere in the source/css/readme files.
Moreover, Creative Commons license is not compatible with GPL – http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/license-list.html

        • Magnus Jepson
          26 September 2009 at 7:31 am #

The theme doesn’t need to give credit, but you need to link back to this article on the web page you put the theme up for download.

          • Rahul
            26 September 2009 at 11:29 pm #

But once the theme is released under GPL, and having those icons, they themselves would have to inherit GPL license. CreativeCommons is incompatible with GPL

  38. app103
    28 September 2009 at 9:59 am #

Now that you have changed the licensing to GPL, developers of closed source desktop software can no longer use them without making their software open source.

I would have been very happy to comply with the CC license and give credit and a link in my about box, but I am not happy with the idea that I will now have to give away my work under GPL, if I use these in my project.

    • Adii Rockstar
      28 September 2009 at 10:06 am #

      You wouldn’t need to do that… :)

Your software wouldn’t inherit the GPL from the icons. The icon files would still be GPL, but the rest of your software wouldn’t.

  67. Magnus Jepson
    27 September 2009 at 7:21 am #

According to the Free Software Foundation, only the code needs to be GPL, so the icons can be credited: http://wordpress.org/development/2009/07/themes-are-gpl-too/

  68. Amit
    27 September 2009 at 11:16 am #

But your own themes are completely GPL (including css/images)?
I’m talking about getting accepted on WP Extend. They require all themes to be completely GPL, including css and images.

  69. Magnus Jepson
    27 September 2009 at 12:14 pm #

Yeah I see that WP.org are a bit “strict” on that license. We’ll discuss this internally tomorrow and give you all an update on the precise nature of the license, so there is no confusion.

  70. Amit
    27 September 2009 at 9:05 pm #

    Ok, great.
But, actually, once you use these in your themes, they automatically become GPL. So any icon in any of the woothemes, are and can be used as GPL licensed.

  71. Magnus Jepson
    28 September 2009 at 3:46 am #

They are licensed GPL now, so you can use them in your themes :)

  72. Amit
    28 September 2009 at 4:01 am #

Awesome, thanks! This is probably the only icon set released under GPL in the recent days. Atlast found something to use in my themes ;)
Just a note – ‘Important: You must link to this article when sharing the Icons, you must not upload these files anywhere else.’ is not applicable on GPL license as far as I know.

  73. Adii Rockstar
    28 September 2009 at 5:54 am #

It doesn’t matter. We ask for accreditation if someone were to share this set elsewhere as a matter of courtesy. The icons are officially licensed with the GPL to allow developers to bypass WP.org’s strict application of the GPL on themes submitted to the repository. But we’d still love to be credited for releasing this awesomeness when the icons are made available elsewhere.

  74. Amit
    28 September 2009 at 8:41 am #

I understand, but ‘must’ is probably not the best word.
Also, I think commented threads are not working properly here on woothemes?
And thank you for the great icon set :)

  75. Adii Rockstar
    28 September 2009 at 9:01 am #

Amit – Ultimately this is what we’ve decided to do. We don’t have to license the icon set as GPL to make it compatible with WP’s wishes, as it is not a WP theme. WP.org doesn’t own the interpretation to the GPL either; they can however be as strict as they please with regards to GPL’ed themes. Our icons however fall outside of that scope.

I think it’s only fair for us to get some recognition for investing money to release this icon set for free?

  76. Amit
    28 September 2009 at 9:46 am #

Well, the problem is, your themes are 100% gpl now. So if you didn’t license this as GPL, you cannot use these icons in your own themes (once you do, they fall under GPL)
Anyways, these icon sets are the best (if not ‘the best’) I have ever seen.

Recognition is fair, but writing a ‘must link, not upload to their site’ isn’t actually GPL.

GPL doesn’t mean you won’t get credit, but you won’t necessarily get it in the form of a ‘linkback’. It can be in the source code/anywhere. I see you use WordPress for this blog (for the site too I believe) but there’s no link to WordPress.org on the frontpage/blog.

  77. Adii Rockstar
    28 September 2009 at 10:04 am #

You realize that you are busy nit-picking, right? But for the sake of it, I’ll entertain you…

We could theoretically not license the icon set as GPL. Then we could for example use 10 of the icons in one of our themes, which will be GPL’ed. This means that since we are the owners of the icons, we can simply say that the 10 icons used in THAT theme is GPL, as we have the power to do whatever we want with the icons. This icon set as provided on here then, doesn’t have to be GPL.

I think the terms as specified are more than fair (sheesh, I’d think just giving this away for free is a freakin bonus) and this is the last I’ll comment on the licensing matter.

  78. Andrew
    28 September 2009 at 10:54 am #

If you say that no one can redistribute, that is not GPL. You may have to rethink on the licensing in that case – http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html

  79. Magnus Jepson
    28 September 2009 at 11:30 am #

We haven’t said you can’t redistribute. We just ask for a link back to this post. The GNU license still applies, so if you for some reason don’t want to link back to the post, but put these up for download yourself, then you are allowed to.

  80. Magnus Jepson
    28 September 2009 at 11:35 am #

I’ve changed the text in the yellow box now so there are no more misunderstandings.
