This is Exposure

This is Exposure

It’s not every day that we can sit around the (virtual) Woo boardroom table and get this excited about an unique new theme that we’re releasing. But I think – and I believe the whole WooTeam would agree with me here – the release of Exposure is one of those kind of themes to make you sit up and notice.

So here’s my grandiose claim for the day: Exposure is one of the most unique WordPress themes – albeit inherently simple (will get to that now) – that will be released this year. Think I’m being silly? :) Gimme a few minutes to explain it to you (and then you can decide whether it’s all just smoke & mirrors)

Core WordPress Media Management

We all know that WordPress has built-in media management (images, audio etc.), but it admittedly isn’t as solid as the rest of WordPress is (apparently this is getting a massive upgrade in the upcoming version 2.9). But that said, it’s still solid enough to allow you to do some pretty cool things with it.

With Exposure (which we’ll officially dub as a photoblogging theme), we wanted to create a theme that uses these often-overlooked functions that are already bundled within WordPress; thus no need to run 3rd party gallery plugins, because admittedly they’re usually pretty tedious and buggy. We also wanted to create something that is superbly flexible and hence our extensive use of theme options & widgets (more on these later) to control the output / layout of the theme.

So you’ll note on Exposure’s online demo, that a category is a parent gallery, with the posts in that category being the sub-galleries and the photos within those posts being the actual gallery images. I know that sounds a little verbose, but that’s technically what the result is with Exposure. This also means that comments can appear on both gallery- & individual image level, which in our minds just further fuels that flexibility we are after.

Widgets, options and oh, more widgets…

exposure-home-page-widget

If you click on the thumbnail to your right, you’ll be able to view one of the most elaborate widgets that has been used with WordPress (another grandiose claim). This is the widget that powers the homepage of Exposure and from the amount of options available, I’m sure you’d agree that at least in theory it should be rather flexible.

Options for image size, titles, optional jQuery sliders / scrollers (and settings for that) etc. definitely looks as if it may be quite useful, right? Well, why not watch the next little video of this Exposure widget in action?

Exposure – 1. Customize Your Homepage from WooThemes on Vimeo.

In terms of inner pages (category / tag / date-based archives and single.php pages), we have also included quite a few options to allow you to tweak to your heart’s desire. Have a look at this screenshot of the theme options panel to get an idea of what we’re on about. And how about seeing those options in action here:

Exposure – 2. Customizing a post Gallery from WooThemes on Vimeo.

So after all of that… What do you think? Is this as grandiose as I claimed it to be at the beginning? Play with the demo for a bit and then pour out your heart in the comments field…

wooooooo -that looks really cool. I gonna try it out on a page for pics in combo with lightbox.
You guys should make more screencasts for using your themes. This would be a lot easier to config them and for members it would be nice to be able to upload their own screencasts, how they have done their own settings and styles.

What u think about it? So FAQ could be done with screencasts. Audiovisual learning is best of all.

    great theme

I like the idea of members submitting their own screencasts. How many would in fact do that though?

If you have any please email us a link to it and we’ll certainly contemplate adding to docs/faq.

        Well… there were 2 questions

I guess it would be a big hit, if you guys add more screencasts – especially the creators of the themes. Everyone likes it and it´s easy and fast to make.

        Second
I don´t yet, if the would make some. But the best modifacations of themes are interesting to watch and learn.
And it would be a nice ad for their pages and for woo.
        Don´t you think so?

Ask some of them – I might be wrong

If I make some new modifications onto a page with woothemes, I can make some screencasts too – I ´ll keep u posted. Got the software.

Thanks for the feedback. We’ll consider some more screencasts with the upcoming theme launches and use that as a trial.

would be also nice to be able to use custom fonts in this theme, because you could use stylish fonts like the title “exposure”.

    Wasn´t that included in “Therapie” – ?

okey, just thought I’d start this off saying, I have lotsa respect for woo and obox, proudly SA… but I must say adii, that whole smoke and mirrors thing, was pretty sharp. LOL…

Theme looks awesome! Well done guys!

Hehe, we love the Obox crew and love the new stuff they have coming. So the smoke & mirrors reference was a little nudge-nudge at their upcoming Through the Lense theme, which will be… erm.. the 2nd most unique theme this year. :)

You guys just keep on pushing the boundaries… I love it.

I agree on the ‘more screencasts’ piece, simply because it can be a great way to show people just how unique your themes really are. One glance at a screenshot just doesn’t even come close to doing them justice, not when there are so many sweet features built in.

I haven’t had a chance to play inside Exposure yet; does it handle video in the same way (or in a compatible way) as images?

    • pedro67
      15 October 2009 at 11:51 am #

I guess there comes a big change with 2.9 and linking media.

Will the theme work same with 2.9? Guess new wp will confuse some themes.

And Adam has the same opinion with videos/screencasts. Thanks.
I don´t know a lot of pages offering great support and you could even catch a loooot of more customers with screencasts. You guys know how to to them – not a big thing.

      • Adii Rockstar
        16 October 2009 at 2:23 am #

WP 2.9 will definitely be backwards compatible which basically means that existing WP themes may just not be able to use the new functionality unless updated, but it will still work fine. Once the functionality is confirmed, we’ll be looking into it and decide how we may integrate it into our themes to improve what we already offer.

I posted a pic on my flickr as to what helped me out. I duno if it’s the proper solution though.

Also just wondering about the imagegallery.php template file – I didn’t notice it when trying to create. Saw archive, full-width, sitemap.

    Great theme!

It would be nice if the color schemes Grey + Red and Grey + Orange could be made, a middle term between the dark and the minimal versions. The Grey version, with colored buttons and texts should work.

I am hoping to see it ready for download.

    -
Offtopic: in the new preview theme bar, I couldn’t see all the theme schemes because the drop down menu doesn’t have scroll and my 10″ screen isn’t big enough to show all the options of the theme. I had to move to my Desktop PC in order to see everything perfectly.

We’ve designed 22 alternate styles, so I don’t think we’ll be releasing any further alternate styles at the moment. It is quite simple to mix and match styling between a few to make your own custom style.

Thanks for your comment regarding the preview theme bar, we’ll look into that.

Stunning! As an extreme nomad / world traveler with zillions of photos this theme seems perfect to highlight only the very best images and has really got me thinking about another ‘sister site’ to compliment my present travel-photo-video blog on Daily Edition.

Woo Themes continues to lead the WP theme field … very cool themes.

    Hi,

    Where is the EXIF options/info?????

A core element of photography is the recorded EXIF data. A photoblog without EXIF……..

    Why is Woothemes ignoring this?

Does Woothemes have corporate ban on EXIF in their photoblog themes?

Please share with us how this is addressed.

    Morten

    • Adii Rockstar
      18 October 2009 at 11:29 pm #

Hehe Morten… Look closely and you’ll see that Exposure includes the display of Exif data for the images / photos that actually still contains those data i.e. http://woothemes.com/demo/exposure/2009/09/in-the-city/b_009/

Corporate ban? Sheesh we’re not even corporate, so why would we ban anything around here!? :)

      • mortern
        19 October 2009 at 4:31 am #

        Hi,

Yes I definitely missed that. I was looking into the settings in demo, and saw no reference, nor did “Exif” search give any matches, so I assumed Exif was still in the dark.

It’s fantastic that you are finally incorporating Exif!

Then I have the following follow-ups:

1: Will this be included in Woothemes framework, so that all photoblogs, including Aperture, will have Exif-options?

2: Adding Exif data to the post itself will increase information, anad as a mandatory data output this could disturb the layout and feel of the blog post. Therefore a pop up of Exif when user is pointing the mouse over the picture is a better option, as it is driven by query.
Do you have pop-up of Exif included? If no when will you include?

3: Are all Exif fields available for output or is there a static set of available fields?

        Regards
        Morten

  25. Adii Rockstar
    19 October 2009 at 4:57 am #

    1) We *may* consider updating Aperture to display Exif data, if this is possible & viable. The functionality to do so is however native to WP; so doesn’t need to be included in the WooFramework.

    2) Nope, not included at the moment and probably won’t be added in future.

    3) I believe the fields on the demo are the only one’s available.

Given how this is put together do you have any rough guess on how many images WordPress could comfortably handle before the database gets stressed ?

I have a (potential) client with 1000+ artowrks and am wondering whether this would work.

    thanks

Yep, should work just fine. Matt has thousands of images on his WP install and the site runs perfectly well.

I really like the options on this theme! But I have one remark that concerns about every photo theme I’ve come accross. I mainly upload my images to flickr and from there on I embed them into a post or portfolio. Is there any way I can implement my flickr images in this theme?

    Cheers

    Niko

    • Adii Rockstar
      20 October 2009 at 2:51 am #

Unfortunately Exposure doesn’t support Flickr embedding at the moment. The whole behind Exposure is to be your very own Flickr; i.e. you own your data.

Hi, this theme is amazing. Just 2 questions about it:
1> Is it (or will it be) possible later on to have on a post both Text AND image, rather than having pictures on oneside and text on the blog part.
2> Can we have several images per post?
