Our Themes, Your Language

63

by Adii Rockstar in WooThemes News

localizationA few weeks ago, the whole WooTeam combined for a massive hustle in localizing all of our 40-odd themes (at that stage). This meant re-doing large chunks of the static text that we had included, to enable us to use GNU’s “gettext” functions. This means that all of our themes now includes one file (.po) which is used for easy translation of our themes, without the need to edit the core template files.

So… We’d like to launch a new initiative, whereby our themes will be translated into as many languages as possible. There’s obviously a lot of value in this for us and we’d like to reward everyone that actually contributes some translations to the project. How cool would it be to have every WooTheme available in 20-odd languages?

You can help! If you read / write / speak English, as well as another language you can help us out and translate any of the themes we have available. We haven’t limited this to WooThemes-only users, as all of the .po files have been made available here. We think the reward for contributing should persuade enough of you to help us out here… :)

We would’ve loved to do this ourselves, but unfortunately we’re not as multilingual as we’d need to be to handle this internally. So we’re hoping we can count on all the Woo fanboys & girls to work with us to improve our themes even further!

That’s a possibility, but would require some CSS tweaking / add-ons on our side. We’ll look into this however!

It is kind of pointless to have an hebrew or arabic translation without an RTL theme…. drop me an e-mail if you need help with that.

Another thing – It seems like all the po files are without translation for the theme admin interface. IMHO this is a necessary part of localization…. Will gladly make an hebrew translation for you guys (actually translated 4 by now), but it will be kind of doing only half of the work.

What about RTL support, at least for select top themes?? RTL languages have little, if any, themes to choose from :(

Translating CoffeeBreak I used this plugin to work inside the WP admin area: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/codestyling-localization/
There is a lot of explanation in english and german on the plugin homepage.

Hey . this very beautiful and effective step for more distribution of highly functional themes

I’d Love to do Arabic translation if you do want to

    Kinda Regards

    • Adii Rockstar
      9 November 2009 at 10:36 am #

That would be great, but we’d need to RTL the themes, right?

      • Ahmed
        10 November 2009 at 5:34 am #

Cool,About RTL some times its not required and the translation only does the job . However, if you can add the upgraded version of Freshnews with the pot file ill re-download then translate and test it in Arabic demo and show you screen-shot.

        Kinda Regards
        Ahmed

I am currently translating the Headline theme to german. However, we have a “formal” address (“Sie”) and an “informal” address (“Du”) here in Germany. Should we make versions of both, avoid direct addressing or use only informal/formal?

Plus, it happens that there are multiple possibilities for one word/phrase. How are you going to make sure you have one kinda “global” version when multiple people are working on different themes in the same language?

    Cheers,
    Lennart

    • Magnus Jepson
      9 November 2009 at 4:04 pm #

There will always be a lot of ways to translate a single word or sentence, so go with what you feel is the best translation. It’s not possible to have a global version, but it’s always possible for the theme user to modify the translation to fit their needs. The main point is to get it translated :)

    • Adii Rockstar
      9 November 2009 at 4:05 pm #

Ultimately I think most of our more serious users would handle or at least the translated files themselves. So I’m not too worried about having a “global” standard of sorts.

And with regards to the German translations. I’d suggest go with the informal address and only make the one version.

        9 November 2009 at 4:52 pm #

Sure! But can you send a file with all queries “” for all themes? Because in every theme some words are repeating very often.

Just need a single file that combines all queries from all files.

    Hey Adii..

I’m translating the Headlines to Turkish with Poedit. But unfortunately there is no exact translation for the word “Featured” in Turkish. Weird but its true. So i use “Güncel” instead of it which means “Recent”. Is this ok, what do you think? And because of some grammer differences like appendix etc i use “-” instead of “on, at, to”. I’ll upload the first file now and continue with the others..

    • holder10
      10 November 2009 at 6:54 am #

There isn´t a really good translation for it in Germany as well I think…

I have send you a mail regarding the grammar problems arising during translations. Position of text will change in different languages and you need to provide more placeholders in .po files so that consistent grammar can be maintained.

I don’t think just translating word to word will work because it will be hard to comprehend that way.

          Please look into this.

German translations….. I have sent u one in German for headlines. Please check if this is fine for you. I used POEDIT to do right.

Would be a good idea to make a list of themes with already finished translations in a kind of table look.
So we can book a “translation”. Otherwise you will get lots of double-tripple translations….

I like you guys – excellent service and brilliant themes- as well as fast production and bugfixing.
You don´t have to pay me – I am anyway with your developer license finde.
Those translations work fast – I needed about 15-20min for the german translation of headlines.

Hi Guys, great initiative! Looks like most stuff has already been done into French and German so I’m not going to be able to help out, but was wondering when the mo files are going to be available to download? Or will it just be quicker to do my own for the one’s I need?

    same question

I did not understand where to download the language files. Only shows me the english one. I have sent you guys a german translation a while ago for a test (headlines). Did this work well?

How do you control the correct translations?

    • Adii Rockstar
      17 November 2009 at 6:12 pm #

We are still organizing & sifting through all of the translations; so they’re not available in the theme packages just yet.

  27. Gonzalo
    27 November 2009 at 2:30 pm #

I would be willing to translate all the themes that are necessary to Neutral Spanish, just tell me what I do to start, I would be good to offer the themes have already been translated into several languages.
