WeeThemes Gears Into Business

20

by Adii Rockstar in New Themes

It’s been a couple of (very busy & hard-working) weeks since we first launched our ExpressionEngine themes and we’re now glad to finally shift WeeThemes into it’s next gear. Considering that we are vastly experienced with WordPress, we’re taking a little bit longer to get accustomed to ExpressionEngine, but both our marketing & education is growing fast.

First change we’ve made is giving ExpressionEngine it’s own home here on WooThemes. You can now get your EE fix there – we hope it now becomes clear why you can (in future) consider EE as an alternative for personal & client projects.

Then more great news is that two of our best-selling business themes – Delegate & The Station – are both now available for ExpressionEngine. This takes our total amount of ExpressionEngine themes to 5, with more coming soon.

What’s Next?

We’d love to know which of our themes you think we should port to EE next? What are your favourites? And which themes do you think will be a rip-roaring success on EE?

I’d love for Optimize to become an EE Theme. It seems like the CMS themes have the greatest possibility for success, because one of EE’s strengths over WP is multiple channels.

I am sorry but this is an awful move and puts a bad taste in my mouth! The fall of EE and commercial value.

We can’t please everyone I guess ;) Care to tell us why it’s a bad move?

This is great for individuals but make professionals look like weasels.

It is the idea that a completely developed theme/template/website only sells for under X-amount. I have been developing commercially with EE for over 2 years and take my platform of choice seriously.

Part of the reason I chose EE is because it didn’t have the over populated crowd that WP has. The reason why WP is the most crowded platform to date is because it’s free, pretty and has a huge base of free or ‘premium’ templates. Tying in a cheap price tag with any product will eventually pull the commercial value down with it.

In short, I feel like this will make EE just another household platform when it clearly has more purpose and potential than just that..

I guess I could just blame WooThemes for being such a dominant and attractive brand :)

Isn’t it good for professionals as well, that can now cut down their development time by using a theme as basis?

I personally do not think so. Everyone is different and I am sure has their own way(s) of doing things. I could be 1 in 300 that has a personal opinion about this..

I hear you and I think you raise a fair point, but it needs to be noted that in terms of custom development, our themes are an entry level option. So individuals should never consider buying our themes to use them out of the box or because they are much cheaper than custom dev; instead they should go with custom dev if it is more applicable or modify a template to better suite their needs.

    +1 for “Optimize” in EE

next, “Canvas” was a good starting point to play with EE ;)

and after in order : “Thick”, “OverEasy”, “(Fresh) Folio”, “Exposure”, “The Journal”, “Busy Bee”…

(and a big Up for your decision to adopt EE)

I used EE a year ago and loved its underlying architecture. No hacks were needed to be made to either the core or the templates to do any content or visual customizations.

That said, I would like to see Canvas ported over.

This is on the cards, but Canvas is probably our most complex challenge to port to EE, so it may be a little while yet.

To repeat the comment made on the last blog, puh-leeeze put out a true newspaper based EE theme. Gazette would be wonderful.

Do you think there is a market for magazine / news style templates on EE?

Are you kidding me? YES…I’m in the news industry and every medium sized news site I know of is looking for an EE news/magazine theme.

We’ve begged Mehmet over at Gabfire to convert his WP newspapers to EE. I believe he’s just gotten underway on this.

I was asking from the background of being completely new to EE and hence just trying to gauge what would & what wouldn’t work for us… :) I have however noted your enthusiasm and we’ll have some stuff soon.

            Great! Thank you!

Tell the accountants to sharpen their pencils. The sales numbers from a true EE news/magazine theme are going to blow their socks off.

I’m glad to hear that Optimize is on the list of upcoming themes. I’ll buy it as soon as it’s released :-) Any timeframe announced for that one?

BTW, big congrats on helping out the EE community with great themes. I beta-tested Coffee Break was impressed with the quality of the code and options available from the CP. Can’t wait to see what you guys come up with next!
