WooThemes Finally Goes Micro

50

by Adii Rockstar in New Themes

We’ve been speaking about tumblogs for quite a while now, so it’s exciting to finally be able to release the two beautiful tumblog themes that are the fruits of our labour. Without keeping you waiting any longer, we’d like to introduce you to the awesomeness of Cinch & Slanted.

Tumblogging Powered by WordPress

Microblogging has seen it’s popularity rise considerably in the last couple of months; probably as a result of information overload and the fact that most people struggle to keep full-on blogs updated regularly. In addition, platforms such as Tumblr & Posterous have made massive strides in making micro-blogging (also tumblogging) more accessible to a more mainstream audience.

So it’s with this in mind that we set out to replicate the extremely easy-to-use functionality of Tumblr & Posterous, and incorporate it into a WordPress-powered theme. Now you can have the benefits of easy & efficient micro-blogging, right on your own server & WordPress installation, with the benefit being that you own & control your own data (i.e. you don’t need to share that on some cloud platform somewhere else).

QuickPress’ing

QuickPress Widget

The most important thing for micro-blogging, is that the process of adding new content needs to be “micro” to save you time (and increase efficiency) when adding new content.

To accomplish this, we have developed a new QuickPress widget (that sits on your WordPress dashboard as you log-in), which is exclusive to WooThemes and our microblogging themes. The AJAX-powered interface allows you to quickly add a variety of different content (videos, audio, images, notes, links & quotes) without having to leave the dashboard or go the default publishing route (Posts > Add New). Also, there is no need to worry about custom fields when using the QuickPress widget, as everything is handled for you. It’s a Cinch to use! :)

More Exclusive Goodies

In addition to the awesome QuickPress functionality, both Cinch & Slanted include the following features:

  • The themes supports a variety of text & multimedia content. At the moment the following post types are supported: Notes / Articles, Images, Videos, Audio Clips, Links & Quotes. These are all handled uniquely & automatically once you have setup the theme & categorization of the posts accordingly.
  • We’ve included a bunch of unique jQuery wizardry to allow for cool scrolling / navigation between posts, as well as including hot-keys for frequently-used navigation (Home, Search & navigation), which allows you to use keyboard strokes, instead of the mouse.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Go Micro!

We know you want to; it’s the trendy thing to do! :)

Have a look at the demo’s of Cinch and Slanted to truly get a feel of how amazing that front-end & jQuery wizardry feels when you use it. And if you want to experiment with QuickPress & the rest of the backend, jump over to our Playground and play with the micro-blogging themes there.

Nope, unfortunately not. Our free themes are normally clearly mark with a green ribbon. :)

I’ve been waiting for these for what seems an eternity!!

WooThemes showed us teasers and demos and what else, everything and more has been fulfilled!

I normally don’t swear publicly, but Cinch & Slanted are just fucking awesome – as per usual we’ve become to expect of WooThemes of course, but these just top everything off b/c microblogging rocks!

    Thank you WooTeam! :)

(From here on I wish I could use a smaller font size, but…
    http://screenr.com/fBh
I think I tweeted that to WooThemes earlier, and it’s still the same on the finished demo? Works fine in Safari but in Firefox not so well in my opinion. Is that some kind of Firefox limitation or something?)

Ahh, forgot to add: QuickPress is DELICIOUS! Great job on that.

Really cool how WooThemes stays abreast and ahead of the web design trends. We will work toward implementing the microblog format in our product mix. Thanks WooThemes!

I love it when new new themes are released for two reasons. First, I get to work with new, fun themes and show them off to my clients. Second, to watch the comments stream to see what new, unique way “downsouth” will critique them.

    hi guys!

I´m searching for a specific theme. Maybe you can help me or create one from scratch?

So the theme should have the new “tumblr” features. The most important part comes here: It should smoothly fit on an iPad Display (768px for portrait mode) and also show the best video size for hd (640px width). Maybe you can make a smaller sidebar in Cinch – only for social buttons and a pic/logo of your own. Is there any theme like this available or will you think about it?

      2 March 2010 at 12:12 am #

Well, these are our first two tumblog themes, so these are the only one’s available… :)

Why not consider using one of our Affiliated Woo Workers to customize Cinch accordingly for you?

Has anyone tested the theme with importing a Tumblr or posterous feed. I’d be interested in importing my existing Tumblr into a separate site where I can easily place ads and backup the content. I’d still want to use Tumblr for sourcing a lot of the posts though. The community is a goldmine of awesome.

    • Adii Rockstar
      2 March 2010 at 12:11 am #

Nothing beats the Tumblr community (for now)… :)

And nope, there are unfortunately now importing / exporting functionality available for Tumblr & Posterous, but again this is something we hope to explore later this year.

    Woot! Love the Cinch theme.

Would it be possible to increase the content area’s width in order to post wider pics and videos?

    • Adii Rockstar
      2 March 2010 at 12:10 am #

Yep, this would be possible via a few tweaks to the CSS.

Yep, that is understandable and we have considered that for phase 2 / 3 as well. We hope to create something that will further take the best bits of Tumblr & Posterous and bring it to WP.

    Outstanding work…

    Two things…

    1) Can the QuickPress be added to a browser toolbar as a bookmarklet, like PressThis?

    2) If I post to my blog (with Cinch as the theme) through the WordPress iPhone app, will the image, video, etc., be automatically formatted, as it is when done through the blog’s admin?

    • Adii Rockstar
      2 March 2010 at 12:07 am #

      1) Nope, PressThis hasn’t been integrated yet, as we probably need to modify it to work with our customized QuickPress panel.

      2) Nope, the WP iPhone app isn’t flexible enough to work here, but apparently we are already working on something to replace those limitations… :)

I tried these out on the Playground, but when I uploaded a full MP3, it said the file size must be less than 1500K. Is this because of the Playground or the theme itself? Can I upload full MP3s?

    • niko
      2 March 2010 at 1:43 am #

Err, I meant – can I upload full MP3s with the purchased version?

      • jeffikus
        2 March 2010 at 3:16 am #

        Hi Niko,

The Playground only allows file uploads of 1500K unfortunately. But the purchased version of the theme allows for full MP3s.

        Cheers,
        Jeff

What is with the 3for1/4for1 Special offer? When I use the Dashboard, select the Developer Pack of “Cinch”, i do not have the chance to choose 3 other themes.

Loving it! I’m working on customizing Cinch to be my new blog theme (a little position:fixed magic for the sidebar, a few other tweaks, etc). Now, seeing has you guys had to basically build a new backend of sorts for WP’s Tumblr-esque capability — any chance that you’d be willing to reveal what those changes are so that if I dunno, I wanted to try my hand at building an OS X dashboard widget or if I wanted to somehow try to beg (or volunteer to pay) Daniel Jalkut from Mars Edit to implement (or at least let me know if I could add something so it could be implemented) something similar to the desktop apps (or even get it as an add-on to a textmate bundle). I despise using the WP dashboard to post – like, I loathe it — so I’m trying to think outside of the box here.

That said, themes freaking rock — amazing work!

`The themes supports a variety of text & multimedia content. At the moment the following post types are supported: Notes / Articles, Images, Videos, Audio Clips, Links & Quotes. These are all handled uniquely & automatically once you have setup the theme & categorization of the posts accordingly.`

Are there any plans of incorporating the custom post_types in wp3.0 with the tumbler theme? That way we can have truly separated out content_types instead of relying upon the category system.

I’m also curious when it comes to 3.0, we have the capability of creating custom meta fields on a per post_type basis. That way we can fill in the fields for the relevent post_type. Ideas like post_type ‘music’ we could add in artist/album cover/genre/etc…

I don’t see how to add those meta panels to the quickpressing part.

Actually, I’m kinda hoping that with the 3.0 release that woo will come up with very genre specific blog templates complete with all the needed meta fields pre-created in the functions file. The possibilities are going to be endless and radically different than what we traditionally have with wp.

To be honest, we haven’t sunk our teeth into this new functionality yet, but we will surely look into it once released and welcome any suggestions on how to make our themes function better :)

I’ve played with custom post types in the previous version of WP and it wasn’t yet mature enough to be a viable option. It does however look like that’s been changed now and we’ll most definitely be exploring this in WP 3.0.
