WooThemes on Tumblr

by Adii Rockstar in New Themes

We’ve been talking about tumblog themes for a while now and you all know that our messages in this regard have been rather vague. Today we actually have something new & significant to add to the previous conversation

Within the WooHQ, we’ve been discussing tumblogs extensively, and the conversation that we have had with you guys & girls here on the blog is minimal compared to the extended internal discussions on the matter. The only evidence that these discussions have resulted in anything more than talk is the release of Cinch & Slanted (both powered by WordPress) and teasers about an upcoming iPhone app to work with those tumblogs running on WordPress.

Nothing new there just yet… But we finally have an answer to the question so many of you have asked us in recent weeks: Are you making themes for Tumblr?

Now on Tumblr

Our internal discussions has been interlinked with an ongoing conversation that we’ve been having with the big wigs over at the ever-awesome Tumblr, and we’re happy to announce that we’re part of their roll-out of premium Tumblr themes (which has already been covered by TechCrunch, even though the premium stuff has only been soft launched).

We have thus already completed 3 awesome, new designs that are all available exclusively on Tumblr. In that list, you’ll see Generate (by Magnus – demo here), Postcards (an adaptation of Postcard by Mark – demo here) and Rockstar (which is a modification of my blog design, originally by Tim van Damme – demo here).**

Note: These designs are exclusive for Tumblr and they won’t be available for WordPress. Neither will Cinch & Slanted be ported to Tumblr, as they will only be available on WordPress & WooThemes.

More Soon

By tomorrow, our 4th Tumblr theme – Lost & Found (designed by Cobus) – will also be available for purchase. Here’s a little preview so long…

Tumbl’d

So there’s the answer to your question… We’re very happy with the outcome of these themes and we feel privileged to be working with the Tumblr crew on something as exciting as this.

Now however, it’s time to hand the microphone over to you… What do you think of all this hoopla?

I already picked up Generate, and am using it on MatthewCerrone.com. I like it. Totally in the Woo brand, which I love.

I look forward to what Cobus has up his sleeve.

Do you guys plan on offering support for your Wumbler themes, in the same way you do for your other themes?

Also, are your same stable of designers available to help customize these Tumblr themes?

Are these themes available for purchase only through the Tumblr marketplace? Or can we buy/download them with our Woo membership and send ‘em over?

    Thanks!

    Stephen

      24 March 2010 at 3:58 pm #

      Hi Stephen,

The themes will only be available through the Tumblr marketplace, and not included in club subscriptions, as was agreed with the Tumblr team.

    • Adii Rockstar
      24 March 2010 at 5:00 pm #

Just to elaborate on what Mark has said…

      1) As with our ExpressionEngine themes, Tumblr themes are excluded from the subscriptions which are currently WP-only. In future, we may create a new “master” subscription of sorts, which will include themes across all platforms.

      2) We will soon be able to generate discount coupons for our Tumblr themes (waiting for this functionality from the Tumblr crew), which we’ll be passing onto all WooThemes members. :)

All very nicely designed and several steps up from stock Tumblr offerings. Kudos! My only question is what’s on tap in Tumblr-style offerings for WordPress? Mark has indicated (via email) that a WooSlopes style child theme for Cinch or a new theme along that line might appear. Any teasers or hints?

    • Mark Forrester
      24 March 2010 at 4:27 pm #

Never fear! A WooSlopes inspired theme is on the cards for very soon. No previews yet. And we have another one we collaborated with Rogie King on, that we’ll be previewing soon :)

This does look impressive and I am sure it will be very much appreciated by many my only concern is that perhaps this is what people want from woothemes now and this does not really suit what I used to love woothemes for. Please do not get me wrong some of the new developments are fantastic but I am not sure how I can personally use these new developments. I have asked about when the next business themes will be released but did not get a reply from a previous woo post. It just sort of seems the regular style themes have been left behind a little for these new developments and I still think woo has more to offer with the regular style themes. Still, great work guys.

We share your concern and can promise you that the current trend of testing the waters with a few new niche ideas & themes will soon subside and we’ll get back into releasing some tried-and-tested solutions.

    • Mark Forrester
      24 March 2010 at 5:52 pm #

Hi MJ, thanks for speaking honestly.

Our focus still very much revolves around WordPress. Cobus is actually finishing off a very slick business theme at the moment, which was designed by Liam McKay. This should be the next release.

Jeff is coding a theme I designed recently, which is also business focused with some very neat functionality. More on these very soon.

Hi Adii and Mark, Thanks for getting back to me on this. That’s great news to here about the business themes, I can’t wait for these! I think it’s good that you guys are pushing the new developments and am really happy to hear that you are still sending much of the awesomeness to the standard WP platforms. Great work guys.

Will you guys be offering affiliates the option to promote and earn with Tumblr Themes?

    • Adii Rockstar
      25 March 2010 at 7:07 am #

We’d love to, but Tumblr would need to add that functionality to their system, because payment processing happens on their side; not ours.

    25 March 2010 at 10:58 am #

    Excellent work boys!

That’s does it. I’m taking that Lost&Found theme of Cobus and moving my personal domain to Tumblr. The design goes really well with me personally, it probably has all the functions I need + Tumblr is super simple to use and has a great community.

I presume this theme supports Disqus comments and all that stuff?

  17. Scott Webb
    25 March 2010 at 7:12 pm #

i didn’t expect the tumblr themes to be included here. so no worries. great work. awesome movement for the company. Wish I could have invested over a year ago really.

what do you guys think of the themes that are priced at $49?

    • Adii Rockstar
      25 March 2010 at 11:30 pm #

      You can still invest… :)

When we priced our Tumblr themes, we priced them according to what we thought was fair in terms of our contribution. We obviously didn’t know what the other guys were gonna charge for their themes and that hasn’t changed our opinion or strategy in this regard.

Will Woo Themes be creating another video blog theme? Its been quite some time, and I’d love to have one with the current Woo look, feel, and backend.

Tumblr themes are just stunning, btw. Head and shoulders above any others. I think you should call them Tumbloo themes, myself.

    • Adii Rockstar
      25 March 2010 at 11:31 pm #

No video-centric themes in the works at the moment, but always a possibility going forward… We’ll have to discuss. :)

… like your WP backend and some of the designs, but somehow you guys are always wrong on your theme release commitments !

Don’t shoot me for this honest comment, and don’t say you just wanna make sure that everything is right ;-)

This is all fun but when are you guys gonna create themes for BuddyPress? i imagine it wont be that hard to port the current WP themes to BuddyPress? :D

    • Adii Rockstar
      27 March 2010 at 11:03 am #

We haven’t made a decision re BuddyPress yet, but at this stage I don’t think we’ll be supporting it extensively. All of our themes will work with BP, but will definitely require extra styling.

        29 March 2010 at 4:27 pm #

Ok thanks for that, in any case are you guys considering other

I snagged the Generate theme. Can you explain the “Tweets Kill Switch” option? I see no difference on or off.

    • Adii Rockstar
      27 March 2010 at 6:08 pm #

It just switches the Twitter sidebar module on & off.

A natural fit: Theme designers & tumblr.

    re: http://pegontech.wordpress.com/2010/01/19/why-tumblr-posterous-ass/

However, my only question is why would anyone pay for a premium tumblr theme, other than b/c of loyalty or desire to support cool developers, when many free tumblr themes are every bit as thoughtfully and powerfully designed as paid themes? Those from metalab, for example.

On the other hand, I’m looking hard at current woo tumblr-like wordpress themes because I have less time for dealing with the WordPress backend than I used to have. these old wp sites still make me money, however, and I don’t want to abandon them.

The only feature that would allow me comfortably switch is a bookmarklet as functional as tumblr’s is now. I don’t want to spend much time within wp’s admin console. Not if i want to keep my sanity.

This is an interesting developemnt, however. Tumblr is the sleeper service of the year, IMO.

    • Adii Rockstar
      29 March 2010 at 6:57 am #

Judging by the initial response quite a few people are willing to pay for a theme if that means that they get greater exclusivity (compared to the popular free themes which are used on 1000′s of Tumblr accounts).

And the bookmarklet functionality isn’t there just yet; WP has the built-in Press This! functionality, but we’re yet to try hook this into our QuickPress widget.

Looks great, guys. I can’t believe no one’s caught this, but the “demo here” link for Generate is incorrect. You might want to take a look at that.

  25. Spencer
    30 March 2010 at 9:41 pm #

Is there a problem with the Flickr box in Generate? I have entered the correct ID and nothing shows. Is there supposed to be something else besides just a link?

    • Adii Rockstar
      30 March 2010 at 10:03 pm #

Nope, as it is running properly on my Tumblr… Have you used idGettr to get your ID though?

Hey, I just bought the ‘Lost and Found’ theme, but I want to truncate the postings so that articles only show in full when you click through to the posting’s permalink. Is that possible? Let me know if I’m asking in the wrong place.

I like the new tmblr themes … mostly. Am curious if these are single use or paying the $19 will allow us to use them on several tumblogs. I have three under the same login and wouldn’t mind using Generate for all of them, but it doesn’t seem to let me do that. Are these single use themes?

    • Magnus
      3 May 2010 at 11:21 am #

You would need to contact Tumblr on specific terms.

  28. Mike Prasad

What about support or basic set up doc for Generate? I love the theme, already paid for it, but one of the things I would hope comes with a premium theme (and one thing I love about woothemes in general) is the provided support docs.

    • Adii Rockstar
      4 May 2010 at 9:39 am #

Fair comment. We never decided on a support policy for our Tumblr themes when we set out to release themes on the platform. So we’re working with the Tumblr crew at the moment to figure out an appropriate strategy in this regard.
