So… We’ve actually been working on some real innovation (not *this* kind of innovation) with regards to our ever-expanding list of tumblog themes (currently there’s Unite, Retreat, Cinch & Slanted with Crisp coming next week) here on WooThemes.
All of these tumblog themes were released prior to WP 3.x being available, which means that we didn’t have the benefit of using custom post types or taxonomies, even though it would’ve been perfectly suited for this. We recently had a discussion with Matt (Mullenweg) though about this and he suggested that we implement a standard custom taxonomy for the tumblog type posts, as he wanted the rest of the WP community & theme developers to adopt this as well. This lead to us implementing & trialing this when we released Unite two weeks ago.
The “beta” of this functionality has gone really well and the feedback on Unite has been great. So we have just gone ahead and upgraded the other tumblog themes with this functionality as well; so you’re able to rock some custom taxonomy love in your WooThemes tumblogs.
Upgrading
For the “older” tumblog themes (Retreat, Cinch & Slanted) we’ve also developed an upgrade script which will migrate your existing tumblog posts to the new taxonomy, so that you can take advantage of the new functionality in the latest versions of these themes. Cinch, Slanted, and Retreat will have the upgrade functionality in them for the next 2 months, however after that it will be phased out and will by default be in the 2.0 state. This is in anticipation of the iPhone app launch. Check out the demos and Playground to test the new functionality.
Express: The iPhone app
Wait for it… Yep, our iPhone app – Express (to publish to your WooThemes tumblogs on the fly) – is thus also in the final stages of beta testing. The implementation of the custom taxonomy obviously delayed this (plus we had to re-do big parts of the app), but since the suggestion came from Matt we wanted to this before moving ahead with the app.
Expect some more news imminently. ![]()

I was actually thinking about this yesterday. How nice it would be if Woo had a mobile admin ability b/c the wp iphone app sucks and it’s tough to edit from the back end on an iPhone.
The WP iPhone app is mind-boggling bad when compared to how awesome everything they do is.
Woo to the rescue… I hope.
It’s just important to note that we’re not trying to replace the WordPress iPhone app, as that includes much more functionality. Our app will just include the functionality to post content to the tumblogs; so it’s not a complete WP management tool for the iPhone.
Now finally make it front-posting and we’ll all love you…
Totally awesome guys!
I’ve been searching everywhere for a good example of front end posting of custom post-types via the iphone for some time now. Can’t wait to read through the code and see how it is done.
We’d be happy to teach you a few new skills & techniques then!
You have no idea how excited I am to read through the code.
Ever since I started using custom post-types/taxonomies in my woo themes, the one thing I have not been able to accomplish is to build an iphone app that allows my users to post their custom post-types via the iphone.
I missed out on the actual wp beta team as I found out to late, so hearing you guys are doing this is fantastic!
Heck, so far I have not even found a front end editor ‘p2 style’ that allows me to modify the custom post-type input that picks up all my required cusotm metaboxes and taxonomies for the post type. To early in the game I suppose.
It would be nice to see the iPad get some love with your upcoming iPhone app by making it universal. Seems like developers have abandoned the iPad once iPhone 4 was released.
When we started developing the iPhone app, the iPad was only a rumour.
So the iPad is definitely something we’ll be looking into once we release the iPhone version.
I’m really looking forward to this!
Which bit?
This functionality is already in the themes and we’re just wrapping up the iPhone app now.
I love the custom fields BUT does anyone know how to have their category automatically set? So the user uses the custom post fields but does not have to set the category, its done automatically?
Finding it hard to get answers to this
@Gavin – the category/taxonomy of the post is set for you when you post from the tumblog dashboard widget
you can also assign it multiple taxonomies/categories.
Thanks, jeffikus, I am trying to create my own custom posts (I have managed this) just cant find the code to set the categories automatically.
Can you do custom CSS styling on a per-post-type basis?
