Continuum, In Theory

27

by Adii Rockstar in New Themes

Looking back at WooThemes’ history, we can probably identify a few “pillars” on which we’ve built the company. One of those pillars is the quality of our magazine themes; which is also one of the founding pillars of premium WordPress themes in general.

So with that in mind, we teamed up with design genius, Simon Collison (Colly), to create our newest magazine theme, Continuum.

Quality Continuity

In Theory

This is the dictionary definition of “continuum”:

Continuum (theory), anything that goes through a gradual transition from one condition, to a different condition, without any abrupt changes.

Now this is probably one of the most appropriate theme names we’ve ever chosen, because if you have a look at Continuum & any of our other magazine themes, you’d rightly note that not much has changed. The feature sets are pretty similar and the structure doesn’t differ much from theme to theme, but that’s only because a winning recipe stays a winning recipe. :)

So for us, our magazine themes are about continuity and building on the success that we’ve had with our magazine themes without having to re-invent the wheel or go niche (which we do as well, but don’t need to do every time).

(More) Design Theory

Colly has a big reputation within the web design community for being a pixel perfectionist, whilst his knowledge & experience of design theory is second to none. We are big fans of his online magazine design for Frieze Magazine, which he did whilst with Erskine Design -  so we asked Colly for something with a similar structure and feel.

If you consider that great design is defined not by what is included in the ultimate design, but instead by how many elements can be taken away from the design whilst still showcasing amazing aesthetics & communicating the most important messages. You just need to have a read through Colly’s blog to get a sense of how good he really is. :)

Unconvinced? Check the demo & see for yourself…

Things are moving as fast as ever at WooHQ and we’ve got some interesting announcements to make in the next couple of weeks. Keep the faith, as these announcements relate to things like this, this, this & obviously this. It’s coming.

Loving everything that you guys have put into this, especially so quickly after Diner’s release. Nice to see more of the old Woo which saw new themes all the time :)

It’s actually great to get such feedback, as there’s been quite a few of our users (whilst still in the majority) who have been asking us to go more niche and to not bother with themes such as this.

I love your magazine themes, and this one doesn’t disappoint at all! Looks very nice and love the balance of featured/popular/latest on the front page.

Would love to see an update/remimagination on The Journal/The Gazette. One with a lot of content in all space-more of a newspaper feel instead of magazine feel.

Since Colly is a EE fan, could we expect to see this theme released as an EE theme too? :)

We haven’t yet decided what our next steps with regards to EE & Drupal are… So don’t expect to see it on EE in the too-near future. :)

Unfortunately that’s the downside of having such content-rich pages… This jQuery script should however be able to take care of that: http://plugins.jquery.com/project/lazyload

Love the clean look and feel of this design. The Latest News section on the home page looks fantastic.

I’m going to try and mashup bits of this with the Spectrum theme.

    Nice work guys.

If the magazine themes are all just variations why not sure sell them as cheap child themes to canvas (or beef up canvas and sell it at a premium).

I have Canvas 99% of the way that I could ever want it .. EXCEPT .. for what this theme has .. sub sections for latest posts, popular posts .. etc. Do you think it’s ever going to be possible on Canvas to get certain specified categories on the home page?

If so, I will be in design Nirvana!!!

You can exclude categories in the Canvas Magazine options, but that could easily be edited to include specific categories. Post in the forum and we’ll help you out.
