Tumblog Upgrade for WP 3.1

16

by Adii Rockstar in Blog

We’re all still basking in the euphoria of WP 3.1 finally being released and as we noted yesterday, all of our themes are indeed compatible with WP 3.1. We are however pushing a minor update to all of you that are using any of our tumblog themes.

One of the major new features that WP 3.1 has included is the new, standardized Post Formats (we actually worked with the core team on this, as we were the first theme developers to have used different post types / formats before this was included in the WP core). The latest versions – now available in your dashboards – of our tumblog themes now includes the use of Post Formats, which is obviously also perfect timing considering the launch of Tumblr2WP.

Upgrading to Post Formats

Tumblogging Post Formats

Upgrading your tumblog theme or WooTumblog plugin settings is really quick & easy:

  1. Download & upload the new version of your theme or the WooTumblog plugin (depending on which you are using).
  2. Head to the “Tumblog Setup” tab in the theme / plugin options screen in WordPress Admin. For the “Tumblog Content Method” option select “Post Formats” (pictured above) and save your settings.
  3. And that’s it… Everything will still be working just perfectly: the dashboard publishing widget, the front-end functions and even Express.app have already been updated to work with Post Formats. :)

Happy tumblogging!

great to see you have such a fast update to the tumblog themes with the release of wp 3.1 post formats. :)

do you have plans to update any of your other themes with post formats?

      Not at this stage no.

What is the benefit in updating older themes with this?

The benefit is that your customers will be able to use post formats on non tumblog themes. This is a question I asked some time ago and the answer at that time was that the implementation of post formats, at least for canvas, was in the pipeline – has this stance changed?

i’m using continuum for a news site. i plan on using post formats to help differentiate my posts. there are definitely regular articles which will stay with a traditional default post format but i also see using almost all of the post formats as well.

i really like the idea of being able to categorize by post format so i can display/style the post formats differently and also query/select by format for various groups and lists of headlines.

i don’t view post formats exclusively for tumblr like micro-blogging. i see it as an opportunity to fill in the gaps and expand content pieces beyond regular articles and posts. I can see where almost every site type or niche has pieces of information that don’t warrant a full length article or traditional post but would add great pieces of info.

as far as the benefit for woo going back to update older themes i would see it as a great thing, i would use them. i understand it would be a large undertaking though so i don’t know how feasible it would be for woo to go back an make such theme additions. i do hope that the post formats will be integrated into all woo themes going forward though and not just the tumblogs.

are you planing to integrate the new post formats like gallery and status into your existing tumblog themes? I’d love to have a gallery format for my photo blog … just wondering

Yes, this is an option that we are considering at this stage. We’re releasing another theme on WP.com soon and have actually integrated these in there.

What about WP Bundle, specifically Nimble–will this get the framework upgrade that supports Tumblog posts to be converted to post formats?

Yep, all of the other WooTumblog-powered themes should be following suite with these upgrades shortly, but that wholly depends on their respective developers.

I’m curious as well – will the users of the tumblog plugin y’all make be able to convert from that to post types? Eg: i use a theme that’s not a Woo theme but uses the Woo tumblog plugin – would love to upgrade that site to 3.1 and convert from the wootumblog plugin to native post types.

    TIA!

Yep, WooTumblog plugin has already been updated in the exact same way. Just make sure you upgrade to the latest version. :)

Sweet! That’s great news! [and, btw, yes, i do use your themes too, but one of my sites, a photo project 365 site, uses a WooTumblog plugin-powered theme i purchased from Theme Forest, and i've been a bit worried about how 3.1 would affect that theme].

Thanks again for the great support and themes! I’ve got no interest in discontinuing my club subscription here! :)

    Thanks very much for this,

I was looking through your documentation but could not find anything related on doing a custom query for a post format.

It seems there is no documentation since it is such a new feature, http://wordpress.org/support/topic/post-formats.
