Harness your inspiration with the Athena theme

Written by Matty Cohen on September 25, 2012 Product News.

Inspiration is a core element that drives us all when developing products here at WooHQ, as well as within the WooCommunity, when using WooThemes products to complete projects for happy clients. We feel, why not showcase that inspiration in a clean, clear and flexible WordPress theme? Athena is that theme.

Designed by James McDonald, Athena is a robust business/portfolio/blogging theme with a modular, airy homepage, to best showcase your content. Athena includes our popular portfolio feature, as well as customised homepage components for an introductory message and a clear featured slider, to showcase your blog posts.

The WooCommerce powered shop module on the home page.

Athena (Greek goddess of inspiration, mathematics, wisdom) features unique overlay hovers for portfolio items and products, allowing the focus to be on showcasing your imagery. The text stays out of the way until the visitor hovers over a product or a portfolio item, at which point they are presented with everything they need to know about the product or portfolio item.

The portfolio page with a neat item hover effect.

As with our recent PixelPress and Scrollider theme releases, Athena has custom styling for WooDojo and it’s bundled features, to enhance your website with a tabs widget, Twitter stream, Instagram photo stream widget and more.

Athena comes bundled with WooCommerce support from day 1. If WooCommerce isn’t active, the theme works just as well… and looks just as great. 🙂

As with all WooThemes themes, Athena isn’t just for business or commerce. With a few minor tweaks to the comprehensive theme options, Athena can transform into a blog theme, a purely business-focussed website, or a personal nameplate homepage. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

The blog page template with Jame's attention to detail even in the WooTabber.

Broken link perhaps? At least for me – the Live Demo button goes to Scrollider or a login screen.

    Hi guys,

Our sincerest apologies for this. The demo should now be 100% visible. 🙂

    Thanks and regards,

Athena is coming up in the shopping cart as costing $70, and therefore not applying the automatic 30% discount.

I just don’t understand this. Do you guys not even *try* testing in other browsers before release? These are huge issues.

        • Magnus
          September 25, 2012 at 10:36 pm #

Of course we browser test. I reported this bug while testing, and it was retested twice on other computers, but didn’t appear there. But this confirms it wasn’t just a local issue.

          September 26, 2012 at 4:17 pm #

All the testing in the world isn’t guaranteed to find all the bugs in software (or hardware, for that matter). Why? Because every system is setup differently from the moment you turn it on and start using it: there are no two completely identical systems on the planet, because there will always be somethings, whether hardware or software, just slightly different.

So Woo can test all they want on their systems, but once it’s released into the wild, anything can happen. It’s just a simple fact of life and source of frustration not only to manufacturers and developers but also to end-users. We don’t live in a controlled environment.

Wonder what happens when you place a normal sized logo in there? Would love to see how it looks with more components on home page

    September 26, 2012 at 12:17 am #

    First thoughts after playground testing
    1. logo plays nice at various sizes and elements fit nicely for menu (well done)
    2. no testimonials template
    3. no component for adding blog items for home (very limited components as is)
    4. Woo really needs good team template for all biz themes, every business website we do requires addition of team members plugin or hack (and we have over 100)

All in all it is just a very basic them which could have been wonderful with a little more time and effort, but is let down by its limitations.

Sorry to be so negative, but it has been a few years now and really expecting some cool stuff now that you are only doing one per month.

      Hi Peter,

Thanks for your feedback on Athena. I can clarify a few points:

      Testimonials:

This is not included in every theme and has been intentionally excluded from Athena as we are constructing a new and improved approach to handling testimonials 🙂

      Team page:

This can be created in any theme using column shortcodes, images and text. If you need more detailed “team” page in mind, please post your thoughts on http://ideas.woocommerce.com/.

      Homepage components:

It’s important to note that any widget can be placed on the homepage. Listing your recent blog posts could be achieved by adding the “Recent Posts” widget, for example. We’ll look into adding a few extra components to the list though. 🙂

      Extra functionality:

It’s also important to note that Athena works out of the box with both WooDojo and WooCommerce. Therefore, functionality added to either plugin would work with Athena (WooSlider as well). 🙂

I hope this clarifies things, Peter. Thanks, again, for your feedback. 🙂

      Thanks and regards,
      Matty.

I would second a nice team page template in business themes. Almost every business website I launch has a team page. We build them out using shortcodes and so on – but something to adapt would be super in future releases.

You need to show us an example of a ‘nice team page’. As Matty said, it should be easy enough to create a good looking staff page using the column shortcodes.

It’s not that easy to create a team page when using column shortcodes. I’m doing one right now in Canvas. When you add the responsive factor to the columns, plus a picture of the staff, plus text and list type info (email, phone, twitter, etc.) for each person – it gets complicated quickly. Not easy for users to add staff either. This would be a great addition to WooDojo for all themes.

    Beautiful theme!
One comment: I do not like the way navigation is being handled when moving into mobile mode. It took me a while to even find where it was hiding and I suspect the average user will not be able to find it at all.

    Hi,
This theme looks good but i would like to know if it has the same options as Canvas theme ?
Layout with several columns ? Mainly 3 center and 3 right ?
Also does it have the sidebar manager ?
    Thanks for your answer.

When is the first theme update coming out for this? I reported at least 4 bugs to you guys through the support system about a week ago and there hasn’t been a fix. I’m working on a client site and can’t progress until the bugs are worked out- display for Firefox and the issues with the portfolio are prohibitive for launch.

    Thanks!
