WooCommerce 2.0 final testing, Release Candidate 1 is here!

Written by Coen on February 4, 2013 Product News.

I have some good news for all of you waiting for WooCommerce 2.0. This afternoon, we have tagged the current development build as Release Candidate 1, indicating that we think it’s ready to release. Unfortunately, we’re not perfect so we need you all to test this RC1 before we make it to the official release. This starts the final stages of testing before the final WooCommerce 2.0 release is here. If you haven’t tested it yet, now is the time!

As always, we do not recommend you run this version on a live website unless you know what you are doing. Although this is a Release Candidate, there still might be bugs in this release and we do not want to break your website. Please test this version on a subdomain install just for testing purposes. As with the beta releases, we still do not support this version. WooCommerce version 1.6.6 is the only version we provide support for.

When you think you have found a bug, please check the list of issues to see if it hasn’t been reported yet. If it is not reported there yet, please report it and be as thorough as possible. Do list the hosting environment you are running this on and be as detailed as possible on what plugins or theme you are using. We need all the details of your bug report we can get, which will make it easier for us to fix the bug.

Final testing for themes and plugins

Theme and plugin developers, this is your final call to test WooCommerce 2.0 compatibility. We have implemented a lot of new stuff which you can find in the changelog and you don’t want your theme or plugin to break once people start updating WooCommerce.

Our team of developers is working on getting all our premium extensions and themes compatible with WooCommerce 2.0. We are closing in on making them all compatible and will make sure they are before releasing the final version of WooCommerce 2.0 so you can enjoy everything without worrying about compatibility!

We are currently writing documentation and a blog post on updating best practices, so don’t despair about this update if you are not sure how to do it. We will publish a blog post on how to make sure your website is ready for WooCommerce 2.0 very soon.

    Whoop Whoop!

Having tested this from the starter since before it was 2.0.0, this is getting even more brilliant every day you guys are working on it 🙂 which is nearly every day to add.

    Again, Whoop Whoop!

Once RC1 has been thoroughly tested and a stable release is announced, is it going to be about additional functionality, or will the release include security fixes and should thus be rolled out across all websites running WooCommerce?

    • Coen Jacobs
      February 5, 2013 at 9:55 am #

Once 2.0 is released, this will include all new features and security fixes. If there is no imminent security issue in the 1.6.x branch, that branch will be stopped completely. If we find a critical security issue within the first couple weeks/months in 1.6.x branch, we might patch it depending on the nature of the issue.

You may consider our latest stable release, 1.6.6 to be safe and there are no imminent security issues known in there that we’ve patched in 2.0.

Long term it is always best to update to the 2.x versions as soon as possible, just like you do with WordPress. The older 2.x versions there are also no longer updated.

Why did you replace Fancybox with prettyPhoto? Just curious..

    • Coen Jacobs
      February 5, 2013 at 9:57 am #

Because Fancybox is no longer updated in the GPL branch and we want our code to be as up to date as we can, but also stay fully GPL.

    • James Koster
      February 5, 2013 at 2:30 pm #

Also, prettyPhoto brings some useful features to the table (gallery thumbnail navigation) and is the script we use in our themes.

Very excited for this, great work Wooteam!

I see that you don’t support this release, but will you support upgrading from the RC to the 2.0 stable version?

Looking forward to testing it out.

    • Coen Jacobs
      February 5, 2013 at 9:59 am #

We consider the RC1 to be very close to the final release, so updating should not be a problem. In fact, just pasting the final files over a working RC1 install should do the trick, we do not plan for any database changes between those two versions. I can’t promise this will stay the same though, that’s why we can’t support this RC1 version. I think it will work, but you can’t blame me if it doesn’t. 😉

Hi, thanks for this great plugin …
i would like to know if you are planning to release a multilingual plugin fro woocommerce.

I’m having some issues, trying to traslate WC products and pages …

I’ve used WPML but it’s not working very well …
    Any plan? any suggestions?

    thanks,
    Paolo

    • Coen Jacobs
      February 5, 2013 at 11:58 pm #

We are not planning or working on a multilingual plugin by ourselves because WPML is doing their job very well. We have been working with the WPML team in the past few months to ensure compatibility between WooCommerce and WPML is maximised, so both plugins should work even better together in the future. In case you are still thinking WPML can do better, please let us know how and I’d be happy to relay this to the WPML team.

Aside: have you considered displaying the date on your blog posts? When you announce something “this afternoon” it’s hard to set in context without that info.

I’m just tinkering with Woocommerce for the first time, and trying to get it working with Catalyst. Thinking maybe I should just leave the sticking points till the new release comes out. The shop and product pages seem to behave differently from the cart and checkout pages, in terms of formatting, customising sidebars, etc. Any idea whether that’ll get smoothed out?

    • Chris
      February 6, 2013 at 10:20 pm #

Date is on the upper left in green, no?

    • Coen Jacobs
      February 7, 2013 at 12:13 am #

The date of each post is show in the green bubble at the top right of each post. Sorry to have you confused there.

If anything goes wrong in terms of formatting or pages not showing as you expect them to, we have extensive documentation in integrating with themes, for example: http://wcdocs.woocommerce.com/codex/third-party-custom-theme-compatibility/

If anything, it will not get smoother in 2.0 than it is in 1.6.6 now. Main reason for that is simple, every single theme does it differently and it is impossible for us to adapt our code to all those themes. That’s why we provide compatibility up to a certain level (which works for 90% of all themes) out of the box and the rest (like yours, in this case) needs a little tweaking. Trust me, once you’ve read the docs you’ll see that it’s easy.

      • Tim Gray
        February 7, 2013 at 1:06 am #

Ah, I see what’s happened with the date. I have my browser zoom set at 120%, and your green bubble is off the left edge of the screen.

I was thinking less about integration with every specific theme and more about the differences between the Woocommerce pages that cause them to behave differently. For instance, I found today that custom widget areas set up in Catalyst or, indeed, in Woo Sidebars work on some pages but not others. It’d be nice to have stuff work across all of them.

        • James Koster
          February 7, 2013 at 3:32 pm #

All the pages should work the same except the product archives ‘page’ which is actually a post type archive. However, you should still be able to set up a custom sidebar for it using WooSidebars for example. Just create a sidebar for the ‘Product’ post type rather than the ‘shop’ page.

I have been searching around and can’t find any information on this issue.
Is Gravity Forms Product Add On extension compatible with WooCommerce 2.0, I have tried it and it does not appear in the Product admin section as before.
Sorry if I have put this request in the wrong place I just did not know where else to look.

I’m having the same problem with the Gravity forms plugin, as well as the tabs manager plugin.

I really hope these are sorted out soon!

Otherwise, 2.0 is great, thanks for the hard work!

Did a test on a simple site upgrading to 2.0 RC1 with the data upgrader and the plugin seems to work now

          February 9, 2013 at 2:47 am #

Interesting…these were new installs, so no data upgrader was used, but I’m still having no luck, even after reinstalling everything.

I’ll wait until the official release and go from there.

          Thanks!

The plugin panels in the Product pages appear but they are not tabbed as before.

Also noticed another issue which I will log. When creating an order using the Product Add On the options selected are not carried over to the order so all you see is the product ordered and not the options which causes an issue.

            February 14, 2013 at 10:41 am #

I forgot to remove the extension to the folder name. Renaming the folder to just “woocommerce” fixed my issues.

But the tabs plugin does not work as of yet because it looks like the tab function was completely rewritten very recently…

I can wait until the official release 🙂

    Hi there.

Been using WooCommerce since November 2012, and I’m quite satisfied. One of the major missing feature was the multi-download support for virtual products.

I was exicited in reading version 2.0 will feature it but, now that I’m testing the RC1, I’m a bit puzzled. What disappoint me the most is that it seems you cannot enter a description for each downloaded item. That way, the download links in the “order complete” email are not easily discriminated and the user can’t guess what item “Download 1” is referring to.

In my opinion it would be nice so add such a description.

    Thanks.

Sorry, I saw there isn’t anymore the field to exclude an image from the gallery as explained here: http://wcdocs.woocommerce.com/user-guide/adding-product-images-and-galleries/ I’m trying to prepare my themes, but how will the gallery work in WC 2.0.0?

    TIA

    Hi Guys,

I pondered whether there was going to be any change to the way the checkout worked in woo commerce 2.

We’re currently testing almost ready to go live with a site however we really do not like the look feel of the checkout – probably more to do with the theme we’re using as opposed to woocommerce itself however well worth asking.

    Kind Regards,
    Jeff
