WooThemes joins Automattic: The beginning of an exciting chapter

Written by Mark Forrester on May 19, 2015 Blog, News.

Today marks the beginning of the next exciting chapter in our journey as WooThemes. The short and sweet of it – we are joining the Automattic family! Read more about this from WooThemes co-founders, Mark and Magnus and from Matt Mullenweg of Automattic.

WooMattic

What does this mean for our customers? If you’re using WooThemes products (extensions, themes, or other) your subscriptions and experience will continue as before and there is no reason to worry. In the coming weeks and months you can expect business as usual from WooThemes, now with the added power of Automattic behind everything we do. For support, continue to reach out to us in the same way you always have done.

What does this mean for our team? The Woo ninjas are not going anywhere! They’ll continue working all around the world, with exciting opportunities for learning and growth through the cross-pollination of Automattic’s and our engineering, support and marketing teams.

In 2008, as three strangers in three countries, we set out on a quest to pioneer WordPress commercial theming, never dreaming of the rocket-propelled voyage into the self-hosted eCommerce unknown that lay ahead. It’s been an incredible ride, backed by a unique community, and here we find ourselves powering over 24% of online stores with our flagship product, WooCommerce. In addition we have several hundred WooCommerce extensions, a catalog of beautiful themes, and other plugins. We’re helping our customers launch their online businesses from every corner of the world.

WooThemes is a unique company, very proudly bootstrapped, consisting of 55 smart and committed team members distributed across over 20 countries. Our laser focus has been to ensure that our growth model aligns with our open source nature and active entrepreneurial community.

Over the past year, in response to the growing and more sophisticated requirements of the WooCommerce community, we have been exploring ways to accelerate our growth to be an even more accessible, easier to use, and enabling platform for our customers. We’ve met some very powerful and influential companies and potential investors, but none more ambitious and aligned with our values than the team at Automattic.

Since late last year we’ve been talking with Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic and co-founder of WordPress, and his bridge team about what we could build together. Our plan is to leverage our combined wealth of knowledge, skills, vibrant community and joint infrastructure platform to reach new eCommerce heights.

We will work hard to ensure our growing teams integrate smoothly, are provided with fantastic opportunities, and enrich our collective culture.

To our partners, whether third party developers, designers, hosting companies, eCommerce service providers, or educational trainers: know that this ecosystem will grow even bigger and be loaded with even more opportunities. Our continued success hinges on the success of our customers and community.

To our WordPress friends, with many successful competing products and services: the fact that all of our businesses continue to co-exist with room for all and more is what makes the WordPress community so special. We trust the ripples of our new partnership with Automattic will grow into some powerful opportunities for you, as we work together to help WordPress further its staggering 23% market dominance.

Against the backdrop of an ever-changing, innovating and growing eCommerce industry, we are confident this is the right move at the right time and our team is all aboard and excited for the opportunity to create something truly significant.

Thank you for your continued support and being part of our journey.

Onwards and upwards!

Mark & Magnus

P.S Reach out to us on info@woo.com with any concerns, comments or questions and – even if it takes a little while – we will answer each of you.

Interesting to see how this merger can (hopefully) consolidate and make the all the WooCommerce options affordable and more bundled to the newcomer eCommerce WordPress website owner.

As Travis Pflanz said, I hope that the Woocomerce options becomes affordable. Now they aren’t.

          May 20, 2015 at 6:54 am #

Maybe they will bundle the lot of the plugins into $59/year for 1 site, $129/year for 3 sites, and a developer option of $159 for all of the current bundled extensions for one year for up to 10 websites. That would be a positive revenue source, show their commitment to the support of all of the various add-ons and how they integrate, and give them an affordable price point that most developers who use WooCommerce could wrap their hands around. Win win

Something like this I could understand and buy. The current plans are just way too expensive. I hope that Automattic will bring some sense to the pricing.

Yeah, this is my #1 wish too. I believe that WooCommerce would gain even bigger market share, if the extensions were more affordable.

Congratulations on the merger! You guys have contributed to WP, and the community and this news is very cool! Also, I agree with Travis. With a 24% market share, there should be a large enough customer base to make WooCommerce plugins more affordable – perhaps offering bundles. They’re currently too expensive for the small business startups.

        May 21, 2015 at 8:56 pm #

Yes to that! I had to leave the Woocommerce platform as each new feature I needed aded to my yearly subscription renewal rate… It adds up QUICK!

        May 22, 2015 at 4:55 am #

Congratulations on the next phase of WooThemes development.

At first look, the WooCommerce extensions appear expensive, but when you consider the level of support needed to be factored into the sell price; and also that renewals of a license are 50% discount for every year after the first purchase the pricing is very fair.

If a startup can’t afford to pay a few hundred dollars to setup their online shop they need a different business model.

I have a very small shoppe with only 6 products – however 85 variations in total. Could use some improvements.

        Especially backend bulk handling.

        BTT:
Congratulations to these exciting news! Jetpackize WC and your market share will hit 40%!
Vote for better and more direct backend without three to four clicks per product, per order, per customer to reach desired infos or bulk edit things.
        Backend needs huge improvements!

Looking forward to what the future holds for WOO!

    Hi guys,

Congrats…looking forward to see what the future holds.

Will there be any impact on customer service requests & an increase in your response times?

Any impact on existing pricing structures?

Best wishes for the future, looking forward to the ever improving WooCommerce!

    Simon 🙂

    • Nicole Kohler
      May 20, 2015 at 12:52 am #

Great questions Simon, happy to tackle those for you.

We don’t expect support to be impacted negatively by this. We’re always looking for ways to improve the support experience for our customers (including rolling out some major improvements to our ticketing system, which has also just happened!). With more resources and the support of the full Automattic team, we can continue to make critical improvements and cut down on response times even more.

As for pricing, at the moment we have no plans to change this. If anything does change along these lines we’ll communicate it to everyone as quickly and efficiently as we can.

Thanks very much for your support and please do let us know if there’s anything else you’re wondering about 🙂

      May 20, 2015 at 1:00 am #

Hey Simon! Thanks for the congrats and well wishes!

We are in a all hands on deck mode in support over here. We launched our new Support Ticket forms today too so hopefully this will ensure questions get routed to the right channel to avoid any Support delays.

There are currently no plans to update the pricing structure or change any details of your account downloads or license terms. 🙂

We’re very excited to continue growing both WooCommerce and our other offerings (including themes and plugins like Sensei) along side of Automattic. If there’s a particular theme update or feature you’re waiting on or would like to see, do let us know so we can look into that 🙂 Cheers!

This is by far the biggest thing that has ever happened to WordPress. Will see how it changes the entire ecosystem around it. It is going to be a nice addition to WordPress.com users but not sure how it will change the entire self-hosted theme and plugin market but I believe that changes are going to be more than noticeable.

    Congratulation to both parties!

    May 20, 2015 at 11:27 am #

As a business owner, this is important.

We have a combined B2B + retail site and we are finding it harder and harder to cram everything we need into one site – different prices/shipping rules/order requirements/etc for different customer groups.

The site is not responsive and this has been the trigger for us to look at options. We have looked at continuing our current self-hosted system with two parallel sites, or moving to SAAS with two sites running in parallel.

I looked at Woo, but have ben worried about it and WP staying in sync or causing problems somehow – like the reports I read about plugins breaking with the latest Woo release.

So my question is, do you have a roadmap you’d like to share about how you see Woo developing? I would dearly love to think that it is a platform we can work with.

    • Nicole Kohler
      May 20, 2015 at 2:25 pm #

Hello David, many thanks for taking the time to comment.

We hope that Woo is a platform you can work with too! Ensuring backwards compatibility with all plugins in the WooCommerce ecosystem is top of mind for us, and we’ll be making sure we do a better job of that going forward.

We don’t have a roadmap quite yet, but stay tuned to the development blog here: http://develop.woocommerce.com/woocommerce/ This is where we post updates as they become available (and will continue to do so for the immediate future).

Please do give us a shout here or contact our support team if there’s anything we can help you with. We’d love to keep you with us and are certainly willing to help you with any troubles you may happen to encounter both now and in the future.

      Cheers 🙂

Wow, awesome news! I believe it’s the biggest event in WordPress world for 2015 :D.

      May 20, 2015 at 2:22 pm #

Hi Tony, thanks for your well wishes 🙂 There are no immediate changes to the WooCommerce roadmap. The WooCommerce team is already hard at work on the next version, which we’re focusing on the onboarding experience for new users. We’ll be working with the smart folks at Automattic to start thinking through how we can improve the product and create new offerings we think our customers will love.

Please do give us a shout if you have any further questions. Cheers!

        May 21, 2015 at 11:08 am #

Thanks for clarifying. What will happen with new WooCommerce extensions submissions? Do you still accept new authors and allow to sell on your website? Is there any changes in the condition applied to the developers?

Furthermore, is there any plans of supporting authors selling exclusively on your website?

        • Nicole Kohler
          May 21, 2015 at 3:50 pm #

Hi Tony, for the immediate future there will be no changes to the items you’ve listed. Automattic has no intention of messing with a winning formula nor impacting the revenue of our third party developers. If there are any changes down the line we will be certain to update everyone accordingly. 🙂

    This is history:)
I just checked my theme folder and found that I have been using WordPress since 2005 and the first ever themes I bought was with Woothemes in 2008. It was Grunge and Papercut. The first Webshop we made was with Magento in 2008 and our first WordPress webshop we made was with WP E-Commerce in 2009.

The first WooCommerce Webshop my company made was with Canvas Commerce in 2011:) We have only used WooCommerce since then and have never looked back. Now we even make plugins.

Since then you guys have litterally been a part of how we do business and plan our future.
I am glad to be a part of this journey and wish you all the best.

Exciting and surprising news! We’ve been using WooCommerce for a number of years for client sites and find it very flexible to work with and teach clients how to use. The main drawbacks for us and our small e-commerce clients have always been the relatively high plugin prices (and their yearly renewal fees), even for pretty modest functionality (compared to other open source systems).

Really excited to see what the future holds for WooCommerce in the future!

This looks very promising for both Automattic and WooThemes!

I am very interested to know if this merger will improve support response times. It seems that whenever I submit an issue, it takes at least a day and sometimes several to get any response. Do you have any support personnel in the US? I can’t remember the last time I received a response from the US. This doesn’t matter per se, but it does cause the delays referred to above.

I also heartily echo the hope that prices will go down. WooCommerce extensions are the most expensive software licenses I purchase *anywhere*!

    • Nicole Kohler
      May 20, 2015 at 5:35 pm #

Hello there! Support is something we’re aiming to improve – we just rolled out our new ticketing system, for one. We’ve also grown our team recently and are adding in new resources to address tickets faster and more thoroughly. It’s definitely something we plan to keep improving as time goes on!

  62. GregB
    May 20, 2015 at 4:58 pm #

Congrats, Yes! Great move, Yes! But… As a business owner just about to pull the trigger on which eCommerce platform to utilize for our new on-line sales platform, this makes me very nervous. Of course, we all hope for the best outcome going forward and for smooth integrations, etc. But I do believe that this news puts doubt in the minds of businesses that are currently in the decision phase because we have all seen these mergers not work out, or at least hit a few bumps early on.

Additionally, lower prices for extensions in the future will be wonderful, Yes! But, again, I hate to commit my company’s time and resources today (or in June) only to see prices slashed and feel like we wasted valuable cash by going with WooMattic too soon (BTW, the “.com” is already registered – nice).

By no means do I mean to throw a wet blanket on things here, I love this acquisition and think it will only benefit the greater community in the long run… But, maybe the leaders of the two companies can hurry and release a short-term roadmap just to ease the anxiety of the up-tight business guys (oops!). Thanks for listening!

    • Nicole Kohler
      May 20, 2015 at 5:31 pm #

No worries about being a wet blanket or anything along those lines Greg, we so appreciate your willingness to chime in 🙂

Our aim is to work closely with Automattic to keep the impact on our customers and store owners minimal, and to quickly smooth out any bumps in the road if and when they occur. We don’t want anyone to worry about WooCommerce going away or their money being wasted – those are concerns we’re aiming to tackle together.

You’re not the first person to ask about a roadmap, and we don’t have one in the works at the moment, but we do post plenty of details on our development blog here: http://develop.woocommerce.com/woocommerce/

Hope that helps, do reach out if there’s anything else we can help you with!

This is the best WooCommerce news. Just today I was considering switching to Magento for our Ecommerce delopmemt services due to the lack of scalability in how WooCommerce is built.

I hope they won’t kill WooCommerce by adding it to JetPack.

We disable JetPack on all of our sites, and will keep it this way until Jetpack stops using xmlrpc.php. XMLRPC should have got rid of passwords a long time ago and leaving it accessible ensures that you have regular bruteforce attempts slowing down your site. We also hate the way Jetpack enables new plugins on it’s own and all the outgoing calls related to it.

Forcing people to use JetPack would probably encourage an alternative solution to replace WooCommerce but that could take some time.

    • Nicole Kohler
      May 21, 2015 at 6:39 pm #

Hey Richard! This question’s come up quite a lot since the announcement as you might imagine. Right now there are no plans to add WooCommerce to Jetpack or to force its usage. Hope that helps, cheers 🙂

        May 24, 2015 at 12:07 pm #

This is fantastic! Because of the private terms of my country (Austria) I’m not allowed to use Jetpack. [ in Germany too] Or in other words: it is a high risk to do so.

I love to combine WOO Commerce and your theme “storefront”. All the actions and hooks from the theme are fantastic 🙂 . I need only two files to change everything: style.css and functions.php => this is update friendly!

But you miss out on the important issue. What will the difference be? How will you cooperate with automatitc?

    • Nicole Kohler
      May 21, 2015 at 8:43 pm #

Hi Tonny, there’s quite a bit of detail on how the Automattic-Woo (or WooMattic, as we’ve jokingly dubbed it) cooperation will go in the blog posts by Matt, Mark, and Magnus linked above. We believe we can benefit and learn from Automattic, and vice-versa actually!

For the time being, and especially for our team of Ninjas, there won’t be much difference day-to-day. But we’re looking at all aspects of Woo and how we can improve them (like support, etc.) with Automattic’s help and bigger team behind us.

Does that answer your question? Do let us know if there’s anything specific you’re not finding in the comments and blog posts above. 🙂

Congrats. Good for you. Hopefully good for WooCommerce users as well. Maybe now you can spare some money to have a lawyer and accountant look into some urgent matters you kept ignoring so far (EU VAT for instance, which you are still doing wrong). I was beginning to loose my trust in you as a professional company, more and more you seemed like just a bunch of developers that put together some code of which you thought it was right instead of checking it against laws and regulations to make sure it is right. Hopefully Automattic will fix this.

Automattic is also to be praised for their vision, it’s really great to see that WordPress is moving in other directions — namely, more strongly in eCommerce — thanks to the amazing technology provided by you guys.

Sure, everything needs improvements here and there. But having access to the resources of Automattic itself should definitely help out you guys 🙂

The next steps will most certainly be interesting! Good luck, and all the best wishes for a wonderful fture together with Automattic!

Thank you very much Gwyneth 🙂

As far as WordCamps are concerned, even without Automattic’s backing, our distributed nature and desire to be a part of the WordPress community made those a priority for us. We look forward to popping up at even more in the future 😉

Excellent – I’m hopeful this means they can work towards improving the performance of WooCommerce for larger inventories / high sales volumes and deal with WP postmeta overhead.

So proud of my ‘hometeam’. Still a proud S’African even though I now live in lovely California, USA. As an amateur designer and blogger Woo has been my go to source for themes, plugins, support, etc … for some years now. You ninjas provide a superior product and I’m thrilled that there’s more to come.

    Noooooooooooooo!
    That sucks!
    I trust Woo – I don’t trust Automattic 🙁

I’m glad the Woo team is excited about it, but I don’t feel this is good for the WordPress userbase as a whole. Sometimes having a different perspective is what is needed for further growth.
