Re-focusing

Hanging around WooThemes.com the last couple of days, you might’ve noticed that there’s a few bits & pieces that simply disappeared over night. If you haven’t noticed it yet, it probably justifies our decision, but we still owe you an explanation, and assure you we’ll still be taking care of you if this announcement effects you… :)

We launched our ExpressionEngine themes in January last year, in an attempt to diversify and expand our business. The EE launch was also eventually followed by the introduction of Tumblr, Drupal & Magento themes, which re-inforced our strategy and allowed us to really gauge the demand and viability in these markets / communities.

After more than a year of working hard on this strategy, we came to the difficult decision to transition these platforms out of WooThemes as we re-focus our attention on the one CMS which our core team loves: WordPress.

Even though WooCommerce and our commerce themes on WordPress have been delayed slightly, it doesn’t mean that they need to stall on other platforms as well…

A big homepage featured product/promotion slider

Mercato is our latest, amazing Magento theme and is absolutely perfect if you’re looking to put up an online store front. Designed by Jonno Riekwel (another designer we found via Dribbble and one we hope to have back with us for another design in the future), Mercato uses our perfectly balanced design recipe of keeping our themes clean, flexible, but still incredibly well-styled.

WooThemes on Magento

A few months ago we set out to make a move in to the e-commerce space, from the get-go we decided we were always going to target the three most popular platforms: WordPress (which will always remain our personal main aim), Shopify and now: Magento.

Magento is an open-source e-commerce platform, which has grown in leaps & bounds in the last couple of years offering one a really stable and extremely feature-rich platform. But… unfortunately – as many designers & developers will tell you – it is also not a simple & easy platform to develop on, as there is quite a steep learning curve… So that’s where WooThemes steps in & makes your job that little bit easier…

WooThemes does Commerce

by Adii Rockstar in WooThemes News

For quite a while now, we’ve been considering expanding and diversifying our themes to other CMS platforms, with Expression Engine always being at the top of that wish list. During this time, we never seriously considered the popular ecommerce platform – Magento – until this great opportunity came along to work with Roy Andre over Ecommerce Extensions.

So as part of this experiment, we’ve worked with Roy Andre Tollefsen to port our Open Air template to a new template for Magento. Since we don’t know anything about Magento’s inner workings (our game is still WordPress), Ecommerce Extensions have taken care of all the development of the theme (preview here), and they’ll also be taking care of all the support, client admin etc. And if you notice that the price of the theme is considerably higher than our current themes, it’s because it’s more complex developing for Magento.

Suffice to say, that this is really new grounds for us and we’re simply experimenting with the possibilities that exist for us to port our work to popular CMS platforms (Joomla, Drupal, Expression Engine etc.). We do however hope that this experiment with Magento & Ecommerce Extensions pays dividends, as I’m sure a total ecommerce solution could be a valuable addition to some of our users. What do you think?
