Jack of all trades – Presenting “Hustle”

Written by Mark Forrester on December 13, 2012 Product News.

Hustle is a jack of all trades WordPress theme and today we get to introduce it to you.

Designed in-house by Cobus Bester it shares characteristics with the spacious, clean styling of the Shelflife theme that he designed at the start of 2012, and that went down a treat with our community.

The Hustle product rollover effect.
Hustle has plenty of white space to help focus a user’s attention on your content, and with circular placeholders for your post imagery it really adds a level of polish to your post displays.

We continue to emphasis the quest we are on at WooThemes- to add heaps of functionality to all our new themes via plugins, rather than bundled in the theme itself. This allows you the option to have a super lean and lightly-coded theme, or add further power under the bonnet by enabling our plugins. The theme provides perfect styling for the plugins, tailored specifically to the theme.

A unique homepage design includes a neat introductory message with an optional background image, a featured slider, support and styling for our Testimonials and Features plugins, and then, of course, the ability to enable shopping facilities via our WooCommerce plugin. All of these plugins can be enabled/disabled and placed in any order, if you’d like to customise the order, thanks to the widgetized homepage.

That’s only a few of the homepage sections bundled with Hustle. You could also add a featured slider or showcase some business servicesbrowse the demo to see more features and preview the alternate styles.

Lovingly crafted on top of the ever-popular WooFramework, Hustle means business, right out of the box.

Just checked the demo of Hustle and I like the rollover effects, they are simply awesome. As the title suggests its really a “Jack of all trades” sort of theme. Kudos Woo team.

The theme is looking great indeed (as always). Rollover effects are nice but totally useless for touch screen ! The woo team should implement a fallback for touch screen users.

        Thanks for your feedback, Jacques.

I’ll report this to our design department and we’ll see what we can do in the next theme update. 🙂

There is no fall back as you cannot hover on touch screen devices 😛 You could argue it’s better to remove all hover effects for those devices as they do appear momentarily when you ‘click’ something but I don’t think it’s a big deal.

          December 16, 2012 at 10:58 am #

That’s not what I meant ! You could simply detect touch screen device with Modernizr and display the buttons “more info” and “add to basket” below the thumbnail with hover effect.. All users should be able to do the same thing on both screen sizes and devices but once again it’s just my opinion. Cheers.

    Great theme.

In the demo in noticed when you click on “view cart” top right, it keeps adding the same product. If you just added a product that is. Just the demo? Just me ?

    p.s. can’t wait for the year 2050. 50% discount, right ?! 🙂

To me, at the least, it seems our latest themes all have been quite different in their design and layout. – http://cld.wthms.co/Wx8r

Especially our latest three releases. What design aesthetic would you like to see from us? 😛

      Michael,
      I agree with you 110%
They are good themes and good people..But they are taking short cuts.
Changing the lip stick and calling a new theme..
It is time for some better.

I am happy to see someone else to feel the same way.

      Regards

Our philosophy on themes is that they should only handle the design and layout of a site. We continue to push towards that by taking functionality out of themes, and standardizing it into plugins. We obviously build in theme support for this functionality.

So with that in mind, do you have examples of what you like for a design and layout of a theme?

          December 18, 2012 at 10:01 am #

For example, it would be great to have the woocommerce functionality in a theme like:

Totally. Many themes complex the design and coding. I basically prefer almost a blank page (aka Canvas).

The site should always centre around the site needs first, rather than fight with the design to achieve results.

However, i must agree with some of the comments here. lack of control with column gutter spacing and an over-reliance that the designer will have the site to modify code simply takes time. I do think there is room here within the Woo framework to significantly add more layout options (such as line spacing, word spacing and a decent portfolio / custom post type features easily).

I use woo products constantly, plus themes from GoodLayers of which have a pretty incredible control panel and layout options. Like woo, buying new GoodLayers themes are a cinch because i know how to milk the admin panel. I find you both pretty much covers the bases for a wide range of design options.

Let’s put this issue aside and submit some concepts for an uber framework. I’m sure woo users would have incredible suggestions for you, and provide an insight to what they really want.

        December 19, 2012 at 5:43 pm #

I agree. Im disappointed with this theme. There is nothing special about it, and other themes from WooThemes can be customized to replicate it.

All you are doing is taking an existing theme, changing some fonts and color schemes around, and calling it a new theme. In fact all these themes use the same damn layout. I see more diversity on elegant themes, and as a result, more usefulness.

If this type of lazy development continues, I will cancel my developer membership and take my money elsewhere. Im a paying member. I expect a quality product.

      Hi Theresa. 🙂

You’ll be happy to hear, we’ve had this feature (Widgetized homepage) and a ‘Widgets” page template in Canvas for a few versions already.

If you upgrade to the latest version of Canvas, the Widgetized homepage is in there. 🙂

Long time no WooThemes brings something revolutionary, shocking, all themes are identical except the cover with one another and a menu widget in the header other than a theme to another.

I think something is missing as it was shocking Canvas, City Guide … I am a member of the club, and I will continue because Woo is the best, but I think some time that Woo is no longer dedicated to themes, but to sell plugins and extensions on WooCommerce, reduced and worsened technical support, and other details.

A theme as excellent as it has always done Woo, but not anything different to what he has done.

I agree with some users here. Themes are quite all same style. I love Woo, but I am waiting for months to get an eyecatching different theme. There are so many out there. Can´t you just create some elegant, stylish themes like this for example:
    http://themeforest.net/item/avada-responsive-multipurpose-theme/full_screen_preview/2833226

I would love to use Woo framework combined with woo-commerce, but your stylish taste needs a refresh. A really big one.
Woo Commerce is genius but also looking always same.

sorry to say that but think of it.
(and don´t just say…. you can modify the css like you want. We would not like to use themes otherwise)

I’m really enjoying my time with Hustle today! Very clean design and the circular media style is SOOO distinctive. A couple IE10 niggles but overall a very stable version 1.0.0.

Another winner from Cobus – thanks Woo!

I’m in the process of negotiating to launch 3 new sites in January and after my experience of using the Diner theme for a client. Every one of them will be using a Wootheme.

The themes are flexible enough to be customised to pretty much what you want, support is 1st rate and the framework has been rock solid. I’ve had no major technical problems using this theme.

I’ve used ‘flashier’ themes from other developers and believe me the experience wasn’t that great.

The saying ‘all that glisters’ springs to mind…

The user needs a theme that is how the vast majority of the major electronic commerce sites

    how amazon.com , ebay.com

with a menu in the header, where has all categories, just below a large search box

    http://bit.ly/W79gTB

    http://bit.ly/W79s56

    http://bit.ly/W79ytv

after the products already listed, with support for change in category

    http://bit.ly/W79CcK

look at the picture of Ryan in all the latest themes, we can see the slide, and the rotation of block sales, testimonials, portfolio

    http://cld.wthms.co/Wx8r

one example is these themes woo!

    http://bit.ly/W7aPRq

    Olya , Sliding , Wikeasi , Currents

    different themes and purposes

You can create category menus yourself using WordPress Menus. There’s no point building something in to the theme when you can configure it yourself from the dashboard.

Challenge always is in pleasing all.

Exploring navigation styling options is what I am seeing here and liking it – hope to see more.

Not sure if cart is disabled in demo, but I keep adding and adding more when trying to access cart.

Squares, circles … triangles next? LOL

Loving this theme! I have been looking forward a nice biggie theme from you guys and this seems really good. Althou a portfolio section is missing completely that would be really nice. Are you guys by anychance thinking about a portfolio plugin in the future? Woocommerce seems to be included nicely with every theme but it’s getting kinda meh.. Again…

I understand why you’re playing it safe on styling for the newer themes but I really miss the older, quirkier themes Woo used to do. A bit of colour and personality goes a long way, especially for people who don’t have the time, finances or the inclination to make drastic style changes or spend hours on graphics; I’m lucky that my idea of a fun Friday night is coffee and Photoshop but I’m probably in the minority there (other people are weird!)

Unfortunately I have to agree with everyone else on this one.. blahhh boring.

Other than some round css borders I don’t see this theme doing anything that canvas or another of your themes don’t do pretty much out of the box. There is absolutely nothing even remotely revolutionary about this theme or the many themes released before this one. It’s almost like your last great idea was canvas and everything since then has been nothing but a rehash. Unless of course it has to do with woocommerce and extra money.

Just the fact that you are still doing the same old boring media query driven ‘move the sidebar to the bottom’ for cell phones. I mean where is the ingenuity anymore? Are you completely out of new ideas?

I see some of the top sites out there ‘not theme sites’ coming out with absolutely revolutionary functionality and yet it seems we’re years away from seeing it in the theme market. I’ve seen themes that don’t look at all the same on mobile/iphone/ipad/desktop. Themes that actually use ajax to bring in new information for desktops vs. cell phones, Yet you still send all the data on a mobile and simply hide it with css…. cmon totally amateur hour.. Has woo not heard of mobile first and using ajax to load new assets on larger screens?

Let’s not even get into some of the great touch effects that are all over the net and nowhere to be found in any of your themes.

Seriously, we still have the same slider used on mobile, tablet, and desktop.. why is that?

I think you guys need to start looking outside your four walls and find some fresh perspective and start thinking outside the box.

You guys are always going to get my monthly payment, ONLY because I have a lot of clients who I used woothemes for in the past and have to keep them updated, but it has been a long time since I was even vaguely excited to think about what you have been up to.

It’s sad to think that I put more thought into this comment than I have spent all month even thinking about woothemes. Pitiful…

I love this Hustle theme! I’ve been looking for the right theme to sell my product and I’ve used Thesis in the past with several different themes and I was never fully satisfied. I purchased this theme the day it came out and I almost have my site set up the way that I need it to be. I’m no web designer by any means and I like to have full control over my website and so far I’m satisfied with Hustle’s capabilities. My site is still a work in progress and is getting better every day thanks to HUSTLE!!

I have to say I actually do love the HUSTLE theme.

I just changed my site to the HUSTLE theme and it was painless.

I think its a great step in incorporating a business theme with woocommerce capabilities and I was nervous at first that the new theme might mess up the settings, but everything was smooth.

My only feedback is improve the documentation, as I spent a bit of time experimenting to try to figure out some configurations.
